Register now for the GMCA Annual Conference!
The Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association (GMCA) annual conference will be hosted this year by the City of Decatur September 18-21. This year's theme is "Best Practices for Cemetery Management" and will feature presentations on cemetery landscapes, photo recordation, preparing for the baby boomer generation, Civil War tourism, monument restoration, fence maintenance and more. Keith Eggener, noted author of the book Cemeteries, will be the keynote speaker. Tours will include the Decatur Cemetery, Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery, and the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, as well as smaller cemeteries in DeKalb and Fulton counties. The conference is partially funded with a federal Historic Preservation Fund sub-grant through the Historic Preservation Division and HPD's Rachel Black, Deputy State Archaeologist - Terrestrial, is among the presenters. Two farms recently listed in the National Register
The Willie T. McArthur Farm, located at 165 McArthur Road, Ailey, Montgomery County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 2012. The property owners sponsored the nomination and prepared the nomination materials. The property was listed at the state level of significance because it is an excellent example of a farm complex with its intact main house, outbuildings, historic landscapes, and intact farm acreage. This privately-owned property is not open to the public.

Recent HPD activities
August 6 - Staff attended the dedication of two historic buildings on the campus of Fort Valley State University. Ohio Hall, a contributing building in the National Register historic district, will be an honors dormitory, while the Miller building will be used for classrooms and faculty offices. Both buildings are included in the campus preservation plan approved by the Board of Regents.
August 7 - Staff provided technical assistance to FD Roosevelt State Park sorting out original Civilian Conservation Corps era stored furniture from later additions. The stone Inn built by the CCC is currently used as the park's visitor center.
August 8 - Staff represented DNR at Ga Council on American Indian Concerns meeting.
August 8 - Staff made a National Register site visit to the proposed Windsor Park Historic District, a residential neighborhood in Brunswick.
August 11 - Staff will give remarks at the dedication of a monument on the downtown square of Washington to honor Austin Dabney, an African American who served during the Revolutionary War. The event is at 10:00 a.m. and the public is invited.
August 14 - Staff attended workshop on Electric Overhead Transmission Line Siting Methodology presented by Electric Power Research Institute and Georgia Transmission Corporation.

The Fannin-Cooper Farm, located on Smith Road near Hiram, Paulding County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 2012. The property owners sponsored the nomination and prepared the nomination materials. This privately-owned property is not open to the public.

Produced by the Georgia Department of Transportation, New South Associates, the Federal Highway Administration, and Georgia Public Broadcasting.
AMNHA-Lyon Archeology Study-Slave Cabins A group of volunteers joined Georgia's Historic Preservation Division and Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area to conduct preliminary research on the location of slave cabins at the Lyon Farm.
