May is Preservation & Archaeology Month!

Preservation Month Lecture Series at Rhodes Hall, Atlanta in partnership with the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation every Thursday in May. Lectures and light refreshments are free and begin at 6pm. Georgia Preservation Month proclamation will be signed by Governor Deal on May 2. This year's theme is "Discovering Georgia's Hidden Gems." 2012 "Downtown Georgia" photo contest seeks photos of the state's diverse historic downtown buildings and streetscapes by May 24 .
This year's Archaeology Month theme is "Commemorating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812." Visit the Society for Georgia Archaeology's website for more information and events, including their spring meeting and tour of Fort Daniel in Lawrenceville.

Georgia Trust Chairman Nat Hansford, Jeanne Cyrique and Georgia Trust President and CEO Mark C. McDonald
HPD's African American programs coordinator, Jeanne Cyriaque, received the Mary Gregory Jewett Award at the Georgia Trust's 35th annual Preservation Awards in Roswell on April 20. Jewett was a pioneer in historic preservation who headed the Georgia Historical Commission (HPD's predecessor agency) in the 1960s. Jeanne was selected by the Georgia Trust's Board of Trustees to receive its highest honor for lifetime preservation service.
In addition to receiving this award, Jeanne was recently honored with an appointment to the Georgia Humanities Council Board of Directors. Congratulations Jeanne!

Recent National Register listings
The Taylor-Brawner House and Brawner Sanitarium, located at 3180 Atlanta Road, Smyrna, Cobb County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 27, 2012. The Taylor-Brawner House Foundation staff and volunteers sponsored the nomination and prepared the nomination materials. The Brawner Sanitarium (a.k.a. Brawner Hospital) is set back from the road near the property's southwest corner. The Brawner Sanitarium is an excellent example of a large institutional building constructed in the Neoclassical Revival style in 1910 with stateof-the-art medical facilities. The WynneClaughton Building, more commonly known as the Carnegie Building, located at 141 Carnegie Way, NW, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 26, 2012. This 12-story office building was designed by noted Georgia architect G. Lloyd Preacher. Preacher specialized in institutional work including skyscrapers, hospitals, hotels, apartment buildings, and schools. Completed in 1925, the flat-ironshaped building is bounded by Ellis Street, Margaret Mitchell Square, and a small alley running north to south. In 1962 Colquitt L. Chandler, Jr. purchased the building and changed the name to the Carnegie Building. In 2010 the Wynne-Claughton Building was rehabilitated as a luxury hotel. The project was approved in 2010 for both federal and state tax incentives for rehabilitation by the National Park Service and the Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources. 2012 Georgia Downtown Conference call for education session proposals
LaGrange will host the 2012 Georgia Downtown Conference, August 22-24. This statewide conference, sponsored by the Georgia Downtown Association and co-sponsored by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, attracts over 200 professionals in preservation-based, commercial district revitalization, including new and experienced downtown Main Street directors, board members, architects, planners, economic development professionals, public officials, volunteers, and consultants. The conference sponsors welcome proposals that explore successful strategies in applying the Main Street Four-Point ApproachTM. May 11 is the proposal deadline date.
