The Westside Historic District in West Point, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 2011. The city is located on both sides of the Chattahoochee River on the western edge of Troup and Harris counties. The Westside Historic District lies to the north of the downtown commercial area, on the west side of the river. The Westside Historic District is important for its good collection of buildings dating from the mid-19th through the early 20th century, which represent the large variety of types and styles constructed in Georgia. It also has several high-style examples designed by regionally and locally important architects such as Charles Choate, Richard Kennon Perry, J. W. Melton, and Henry Toombs. The district is an example of how a strategically located, middle- and upper-class residential area developed over time. It includes early sections that evolved organically and a later section that was planned and laid-out by a consortium of prominent families.
Congratulations to former Georgia National Register Review Board member James R. "Jim" Cothran, FASLA, who received a 2011 Tri-State American Society of Landscape Architects Award GA/NC/SC for his publication Charleston Gardens and the Landscape Legacy of Loutrel Briggs. The award states: "While the focus of the book is on Charleston gardens and their preservation, it serves as a prototype for garden preservation efforts which can be used in other cities, towns, and locations throughout the country."
