Places in Peril list provides an opportunity for endangered properties across the state to be identified. The program also encourages partnerships in order to combine the resources needed to secure a property's preservation and continued use.
In this session, Jordan Poole, Field Services Manager for the Georgia Trust, will describe the program and discuss its possibilities for individual sites. Tommy Littleton, chairman and chaplain of Paradise Gardens Park and Museum, will share his experiences in trying to gain recognition for, and restore, Paradise Gardens (above). Located in Summerville, Paradise Gardens is a 2010 Georgia Trust Place in Peril. Recently nominated to the National Register of Historic Places, this site was developed over 30 years by the late folk artist Howard Finster. The not-for-profit purchased the property five years ago and since then has worked to restore the gardens. This unique piece of art, also a historic site, presents special challenges. The Places in Peril program serves as a valuable vehicle to promote this special place. This session will be held on Thursday, March 31, at 3:45 p.m. at the Marriott Macon City Center.
