Historic Theater Grant Program applications due April 15!
This is a reminder that HPD has partnered with the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Fox Theatre Institute to offer a new, one-time grant program for historic theaters. The purpose of the grant program is to assist local communities in promoting their historic theaters through heritage tourism. Information and applications are available online or contact Carole Moore at 404-463-8434. The postmark deadline of April 15, 2011 is fast approaching! Grant awards will be announced by June 30, 2011.

The National Preservation Institute, in cooperation with the Historic Preservation Division, and the Georgia Department of Transportation, is sponsoring two seminars in Atlanta this May.
Section 106: A Review for Experienced Practitioners, May 10-11 Review regulations, standards, guidelines, and related laws relevant to Section 106 review. Discuss issues, problems, and "tricks of the trade,"

Consultation and Protection of Native American Lands, May 12-13 Explore the consultation process mandated by federal laws as it pertains to Native American sacred lands. Review the guidelines from both tribal and federal land-managing agencies' perspectives. Consider the legal, historical, and cultural factors that influence consulting parties.
Advance registration rate for both seminars is available through March 31, 2011.

Available grants
Historic Theatre Grants will assist local communities in promoting their historic theaters through heritage tourism. Application deadline is April 15, 2011.
Preservation Services Fund Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies for preservation planning and education efforts. Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000. The Application deadline is June 1, 2011
America's Historical and Cultural Organizations grant competition funds humanities projects that are intended for broad public audiences at museums, libraries, historic sites and other historical and cultural organizations The next deadline is August 17, 2011.

The March 2011 issue of Reflections, the publication of the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network, is available on HPD's website.
This issue features two African American farms that received 2010 Centennial Family Farm Awards. The Charleston-Allen Farm in Morgan County began in 1890 and today consists of 200 acres. The Garfield Hall Farm (above) in Bulloch County elevated this family from sharecroppers to landowners when 150 acres were purchased in 1904.
Ochlocknee Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery in rural Grady County were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 2010. Located on the outskirts of Pebble Hill Plantation, the church had its origins in 1848 and moved to its present location in 1918.

The African American hospital movement emerged at the end of the 19th century, when black doctors started successful medical practices in Monticello and Statesboro, while hospitals were constructed in Americus and Savannah and the Lamar School of Nursing opened in Augusta. Three African American women share insights on their experiences as nurses and medical social workers before integration.
Plan ahead: May is Preservation Month
Each year, communities and organizations across the country celebrate historic places and historic preservation through a wide variety of events and programs. The theme for 2011 is "Celebrating Georgia's Treasures." Send your Preservation Month event information to Helen Talley-McRae for inclusion on HPD's online events calendar and in upcoming editions of Preservation Georgia Online. Call for Papers
NCPTT is seeking papers for its first conference on outsider folk art. Divine Disorder, Conserving the Chaos: A Conference on the Conservation of Folk and Outsider Art will highlight the underappreciated decorative works of non-traditional artists. The conference will be held February 15-16, 2012, on the campus of Northwestern University in Natchitoches, Loiusiana. NCPTT is currently soliciting oral and poster presentations that discuss topics related to folk and outsider art conservation and preservation. These include treatments, applications, future development directions, and research. Abstract deadline is May 1, 2011.
