Fellow preservationist Mimi Jo Hill Butler of Pickens County passed away on March 17, 2011. HPD's Leigh Burns said, "many of us at HPD worked with Mimi Jo on preservation projects in her native community of Tate, and throughout Pickens County. She cared deeply for the many historic resources of Pickens County and was a driving force behind National Register listings, including the Pickens County Courthouse in Jasper. We remember her dedication and are thankful for the legacy she leaves." Mimi Jo was also an experienced genealogist and served her community for many years through the Marble Valley Historical Society. A longtime Trail of Tears Association volunteer, she is remembered on their blog.
HPD's Joy Melton & the NTHP Diversity Scholarship
HPD's African American programs intern Joy Melton has written a guest blog post for Preservation Nation entitled, Hunting for Georgia's Equalization Schools. Equalization schools were built in Georgia during the 1950s and 1960s to create facilities that were "separate but equal" for whites and blacks. A graduate student in the Heritage Preservation Program at Georgia State University, Joy (pictured above, at right) attended the National Preservation Conference as a member of the Diversity Scholarship Program in 2009 and 2010. The program provides financial assistance
to community leaders from diverse social, economic, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds to attend the Conference. 2011 Diversity Scholarship applications are due electronically by June 1, 2011. The 2011 National Preservation Conference will be held in Buffalo, NY, October 19-22.
