Archaeologists discover site of 1820s lightkeeper's house
A team of volunteer and professional archaeologists have discovered the site of the original lightkeeper's house on Sapelo Island. The structure housed generations of lightkeepers and their families starting in 1820 until its collapse in a hurricane in 1898. Since the collapse of the ruins, probably in the early 1900s, its location had been lost.
Twelve volunteers shoveled, screened, and trowelled through hurricanedeposited sand under the guidance of archaeologists from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, West Florida University, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Several inches into the sand, they discovered the foundations of the house, as well as a scatter of artifacts including glass from the lighthouse windows, which were blown out by the storm. Built in 1820, the lighthouse was in service until 1905 when it was deactivated. Following its 1998 restoration, it once again became a working aid to navigation.

Revenues from the event support DNR's Nongame Conservation Section, which receives no state funding.
HPD announces new Historic Theater Heritage Tourism Grant
HPD has partnered with the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Fox Theatre Institute to offer a new, one-time grant program for historic theaters. The purpose of the grant program is to assist local communities in promoting their historic theaters through heritage tourism. Heritage tourism is a visitor encounter with the local customs, traditions, arts, history, sites, and culture that authentically represent a particular place. Eligible projects include research and documentation; interpretation and public information; advertising and marketing; workshops and training; special events; and signage. "Bricks and mortar" projects are not eligible for this program. The reimbursable grant funds are 50% state/50% local match and will be awarded on a competitive basis. The maximum grant award will be $2,500; however, there is no minimum amount, and HPD encourages applications for small projects. For information and applications visit HPD's website or contact Grants Coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434. The application post-mark deadline is April 15, 2011. Grant awards will be announced by June 30, 2011.

The Winter 2011 issue of the Recent Past Preservation Network - RPPN Bulletin takes a special look at how state historic preservation offices (SHPOs) across the country have been addressing and documenting modernism and the recent past. Articles are from four of the most active SHPOs currently engaging these topics -- Pennsylvania, Georgia (yeah us!), Ohio, and Colorado. The Georgia feature, The Ordinary Iconic Ranch House, is by HPD's own Dr. Richard Cloues, Deputy State Historic Preservation Office. Check out the Ranch House page on our website too.
