Less han three weeks ago, we asked for your help to break the 600 mark for Facebook fans. We've added 22 since then and are now at 605. Thanks for 'liking" us so much! Now we only need four more followers on Twitter to make it to 100! Please help us get there before 2012 - there's a little over one week to go. Thanks!

Alexander Street on the west, Currahee Street on the south, Hill Street on the east, and Savannah Street on the north, in Toccoa, Stephens County was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 6, 2011. The City of Toccoa sponsored the nomination and a consultant prepared the nomination materials.
The Toccoa Downtown Historic District is important for its collection of intact 19th- and early to mid-20th-century commercial and community landmark buildings that represent prevailing design and construction traditions of cities and towns in Georgia. The central business district is concentrated in the blocks surrounding the courthouse and railroad tracks, as is common in many Georgia towns. Commercial buildings in the district include both freestanding and attached one- and two-story buildings. Some of the landmark buildings in the district include the Stephens County Courthouse (1908); the former U.S. Post Office, now city hall (1932); First Presbyterian Church (1925); and the railroad depot (circa 1915).
Toccoa is significant for the presence of buildings directly related to local government activities, such as the courthouse and city hall; and for its role as the seat of commerce for Stephens County. Historically, the county seat fulfilled this role and provided for the day-to-day needs of nearby rural residents with retail stores, offices, and professional services. Read the full press release.
New ACHP website for NRCS
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) recently launched a new webpage to provide information on the partnership between the ACHP and the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). This webpage provides links to useful Section 106 guidance, as well as information on the NRCS' efforts to pursue a new Section 106 nationwide program alternative. The NRCS' existing nationwide programmatic agreement expires in May 2012. Updated information will be posted as it becomes available, including program schedule and milestones, relevant staff contacts, and draft documents. A comment form is provided so that members of the public may forward comments to the NRCS and the ACHP during the consultation on this new program alternative.
