Latest issue of Reflections is now available on HPD's website
The December 2011 issue of Reflections features African American life on Ossabaw Island (above), one of Georgia's barrier islands. A number of archaeological studies have documented African American presence on the island from the 18th - 20th centuries. The National Endowment for the Humanities funded interpretive projects that educate the public about the people who lived there from enslavement through freedom. When African Americans migrated from Ossabaw to Pin Point in the late 1890s, their skills in shrimping, crabbing and oyster processing came with them. A Georgia Historical Society marker and the Pin Point Heritage Museum interpret their lives on the mainland. South-View Cemetery, Atlanta's 1886 cemetery built by and for African Americans, established an alternative burial site where blacks could be interred without the stigma of the segregated section in Oakland Cemetery. South-View's 100 acres are the final resting place for many prominent African American Georgians. Cell phone tours and guided walking tours are available to the public to aid the interpretation of significant persons buried there including businessmen, religious leaders and educators.

For more than 125 years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps have accurately portrayed the complex geography of the Nation. Over 90,000 of the more than 200,000 maps in the Historical Topographic Map collection are now available for download. The USGS will continue to add maps to the collection through the next year, until their entire map library is online and available for public use.
