DNR and Ossabaw Island lose friend and colleague
HPD and the Ossabaw Island Foundation (TOIF) are saddened by the unexpected death of On-Island Coordinator, Jim Bitler on April 10. During his nearly eight-year tenure with the TOIF, Jim led hundreds of groups on the island and developed the first comprehensive interpretive program for Ossabaw Island, encompassing the geological, environmental, cultural and human history of the island. He was a key facilitator for the OssaBEST program, a science and technology education project funded by the National Science Foundation that operated for three consecutive summers on Ossabaw. Jim enhanced Ossabaw's Visiting Artist Program, taking it from a "day trip" program to an overnight on-island immersion experience. Funeral services will be in Savannah on April 16.

Former Georgia NR Review Board member recipient of SGHS Certificate of Merit
Congratulations to former Review Board member James R. (Jim) Cothran, FASLA, recipient of the Southern Garden History Society's (SGHS) 2011 Certificate of Merit. This award was given in recognition of Mr. Cothran's extensive body of work as a landscape architect, planner, author, and educator - that has richly contributed to the understanding, appreciation and preservation of Southern gardens and their history. A vice-president of Robert and Company in Atlanta, Mr. Cothran has worked throughout his career to promote the identification and preservation of the South's cultural landscapes. The award was presented at the SGHS's annual meeting, held in Baton Rouge this year on April 1-2.
Renovation television casting call

Available grants Historic Theatre Grants will assist local communities in promoting their historic theaters through heritage tourism. Application deadline is April 15, 2011. Preservation Services Fund Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies for preservation planning and education efforts. Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000. The Application deadline is June 1, 2011 America's Historical and Cultural Organizations grant competition funds humanities projects that are intended for broad public audiences at museums, libraries, historic sites and other historical and cultural organizations The next deadline is August 17, 2011.

American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), or the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). Architectural Record magazine will publish the winning drawing, and the winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a certificate of recognition. Merit awards will also be given. Community Connections is an innovative, multi-tiered set of activities that involves students, teachers, families, and schools working together to learn about the places in which they live.
