Governor Deal signs Preservation Month proclamation

HPD announces FFY2011 HPF/CLG grant recipients
The McPherson Monument, located in Atlanta's McPherson Park neighborhood is one of two Civil War monuments that will benefit from a conditions assessment report and other documentation, funded by a $13,685 HPF/CLG grant. HPD congratulates the 10 Certified Local Government (CLG) communities receiving Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grants for FFY 2011! They are: City of Atlanta, $13,685 for Civil War monuments conditions assessment reports and documentation. City of Augusta, $12,000 to update a historic resources survey of the Summerville National Register Historic District, Phase 1. City of Bainbridge, $2,400 to produce a historic sites walking/driving tour brochure. City of Dalton, $3,720 for an analytic study of groundwater at the historic Hamilton House. City of Decatur, $10,660 for a statewide cemetery conference. City of Douglasville, $12,000 for an update and additions to the historic resources survey of the downtown historic district and the Lois Cotton Mill Village area.

to nonprofit organizations and public agencies

City of Hawkinsville, $7,302 for a historic sites walking/driving tour signage, brochure, video and podacst. City of Kennesaw, $3,500 for a historic district information brochure. City of Thomasville, $5,413 for a ground penetrating radar survey of the Old Cemetery. City of Tifton, $6,600 for residential historic district way-finding and informational signage.

HPD congratulates Ced Dolder on her retirement

for preservation planning and education efforts. Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000. The Application deadline is June 1, 2011 America's Historical and Cultural Organizations grant competition funds humanities projects that are intended for broad public audiences at museums, libraries, historic sites and other historical and cultural organizations The next deadline is August 17, 2011.

Ced Dolder, HPD's tax incentives coordinator since 2006, retired April 29. Her contributions to HPD were recognized during a luncheon in her honor. The retirement party had a dog theme, in recognition of her

devotion to rescued pets. Ced previously worked as a historic preservation consultant with Ray and Associates for over 12 years. First on her agenda after retiring is a three-week trip to Italy. Congratulations Ced and best wishes in your new adventures. You will be missed!
HPD cosponsors Beyond the Grave Cemetery Conference
Beyond the Grave: Cultural & Ethnical Burial Customs is a 2 day statewide cemetery conference, co-sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Cemetery Association (GMCA), the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources, and the Georgia Dept. of Economic Development. The conference will be held at the Savannah Civil Center June 22-24 and will feature interesting presentations from more than 20 archaeological, cultural, historical and religious experts, as well as informative tours of three significant local cemeteries. Passes to all conference events are available for as little as $100 through May 31. 2011 This Place Matters Community Challenge
The Community Challenge gives organizations a platform on which to declare, This Place Matters! Each organization gets a webpage on PreservationNation to tell their story and rally support from community members. This year, only 100 places will be selected to participate, and the application period is open from May 2-13. Voting starts on June 1 and the top three vote-getters win a cash award!
