Watch Georgia Outdoors new archaeology episode
Georgia Outdoors explores how the fascinating work of archaeologists sheds light on our state's heritage in the all-new episode "Unearthing the Past." This episode premiered Wednesday, September 22 at 8 PM and will repeat Friday, September 24 at 8:30 PM and Saturday, September 25 at 6 PM. Host Sharon Collins visits dig sites on Sapelo Island, the Ocmulgee Mounds near Macon and a dig near Calhoun led by the Coosawattee Foundation, which offers regular programs on archaeology preservation to the public.
In her first stop on Sapelo Island, Collins meets archaelogist Nicholas Honerkamp. Honerkamp is searching for proof of slave cabins that appear on an old map of Sapelo Island. His findings can indicate more about slave life than the history books portray. For example, Hornerkamp can tell a lot about the relationship between slaves and their owners simply by the way their living quarters were laid out.

Collins visits the Ocmulgee Mounds near Macon, which were once thought to be the former home to a highly advanced culture called Moundbuilders. She talks with Dr. Dave Crass, director of the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, about how the work of archaelogists helped to prove that the mounds were built by Native Americans who had highly developed cultures and political systems.
Next, Dr. James Langford of the Coosawattee Foundation shows Collins the Thompson site near Calhoun. Once thought to be farmland, the site was actually a large village that was the capital of the Cherokee nation. Volunteers who work with Langford get a special lesson on archeology as they find treasures such as old pottery.
Even with all of this knowledge, archaelogists still have much work to do to better understand how the earliest humans settled in Georgia, and that is also impacted by geological discoveries, including evidence that Georgia was once connected to West Africa, as Collins discusses with Dr. Chris Bean of Atlanta's Fernbank Museum of Natural History.

The Georgia Archives recently made the following announcement on their website:
Effective October 1, 2010 the hours available for public visitation to the Georgia Archives will change to Thursday through Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm. This is an unfortunate action we must take to meet the difficult budget environment facing all State Agencies.
With the reduction in public hours the Archives staff will now be deployed to fulfill different functions on different days. When the Archives is open to the public, most or all employees will serve the public in the Reference Room. When the Archives is closed to the public, most or all of the employees will work with state agencies to bring records into the Archives, catalog them, and shelve them. To provide better and timelier service for research requests outside the core duties of the State Archives, i.e. genealogy requests, a list of other sources of information can be provided. In this way the Archives will maintain its critical functions with reduced staffing.
Lunch and Learn lectures, normally held on the second Tuesday of each month, have been rescheduled (where possible) for the second Thursday of each month. Please see the website for a revised schedule.
