In 1999, the Section 106 process began for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) project to construct a new interchange at I-75 and Sardis Church Road in Bibb County. Near the end of the process, in 2008, GDOT received information from a nearby property owner that a possible unmarked abandoned cemetery existed in the project area. The area of the reported cemetery contained no above-ground features to indicate that it might be a burial place nor did any maps, plats, deeds, or histories show that a cemetery existed there. However, investigations by GDOT archaeologists and historians revealed that there indeed was a cemetery there, that its earliest graves dated from the mid-19th century, and that it contained graves of African Americans, some of whom had likely been enslaved. Because of the late discovery of the cemetery and in consultation with the Historic Preservation Division, GDOT chose to relocate the individuals to another cemetery. GDOT contracted with New South Associates to perform the burial recovery and relocation. The ongoing project has revealed much information about the people buried there. Part of the scope of work with New South Associates was the creation of a website to locate and communicate with descendants, who now mostly live elsewhere.
