REMINDER: Deputy State Archaeologist position available
HPD is seeking applications for a Deputy State Archaeologist/ Archaeology Section Chief position. The position provides day-to-day management and policy oversight to a section of four full-time and one part-time professional archaeologists who carry out the State Historic Preservation Office's responsibilities in the areas of archaeological resource planning, identification, registration, education, protection, and preservation under both state and federal statutes. The 2010 legislative session is over half-way through the schedule for the year. For HPD, budget proposals include reducing regional planner funding by $47,600 and carrying forward the elimination of six positions that were identified last year. With regard to the Georgia Trust, the Main Street technical assistance contract funded through the Department of Community Affairs is reduced by $74,000. Other preservation-related programs such as the Civil War Commission, the Georgia Humanities Council, and the Georgia Historical Society are seriously impacted as well. Several bills have been introduced that could positively impact preservation in Georgia:
SB 374 creates a Legislative Economic Development Council to evaluate statewide economic development strategies (rehab tax credits are a major economic development tool across Georgia).
HB 867 creates a Commission on Regional Planning to identify issues,

opportunities and funding for statewide service delivery (regional historic preservation planners are part of the service delivery system).
HB 1202 allows conservation tax credits to be transferred from one taxpayer to another (protection of historic or archaeological properties is an eligible conservation purpose). The details of these bills and their status can be seen at www.legis. state.ga.us.

Federal Historic Tax Credit report released
Rutgers University has released a major new report that analyzes the economic impact of the federal Historic Tax Credit since its inception in 1976. It concludes that the Historic Tax Credit is a highly efficient job creator, accounting for the creation of 1.8 million new jobs over the life of the program. The Society for Commercial Archeology, an organization devoted to resources related to the 20th-century commercial landscape, has released a list of 10 endangered roadside places. The places on the "Falling by the Wayside" list are all marked by threats which can include natural weathering, economic hardship, neglect, abandonment, inappropriate zoning, lack of maintenance and demolition. Available grants
FY 2010 Save America's Treasures grants Grants are available for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and historic structures and sites. Intellectual and cultural artifacts include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture, and works of art. Historic structures and sites include historic districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects. Grants are awarded to Federal, state, local, and tribal government entities, and non-profit organizations through a competitive matching-grant program.
