HPD staff news
Rebekah McElreath, tax incentives specialist since April 2008, is leaving HPD as of July 15th to pursue a law degree at West Virginia University. Prior to being tax incentives specialist, she served as an intern in 2007 assisting HPD's grants programs. Rebekah has been a valued and integral part of managing HPD's tax incentives programs during her tenure. Her achievements include helping reduce the project backlog that had accumulated because of staff shortages and developing the Tax Incentives FAQ webpage. Rebekah also completed the research necessary for pending updates of application forms and other tax incentives information, while still keeping up with her day-to-day duties. While Rebekah's moving on is HPD's loss to the WVU Mountaineers' gain, she leaves with our best wishes for success and knowledge that from her experience with us, wherever she ends up, she'll always have a bit of Georgia historic preservation with her.

Two Georgia projects receive American Battlefield Protection Program 2010 grants
The Battle of Chickamauga took place in September of 1863.
The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) announces the awarding of 25 grants totaling $1,249,973 to assist in the preservation and protection of America's significant battlefield lands. The funds will support a variety of projects at battle sites in 17 states or territories. This year's grants provide funding for projects at endangered battlefields from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, MexicanAmerican War, Civil War, World War II, and various Indian Wars. Funded projects include archeology, mapping, cultural resource survey work, documentation, planning, education, and interpretation. The two Georgia projects receiving grants this year are: Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park - $32,100 In 1863, the Federal Army ended Confederate control of Chattanooga, a vital transportation hub, after several key battles during the Campaign for Chattanooga. Building on the work of a previous GIS database developed with funding from a previous ABPP grant, this project will work toward preservation advocacy and consensus building among local planners, landowners, developers, and other stakeholders
