This issue features the Collier Heights Historic District, Atlanta's first residential historic district built by and for African Americans. Collier Heights was developed from the 1940s through 1979 by AfricanAmerican realtors and financial institutions. It encompasses over 1,000 acres and includes 1,700 residences just six miles west of downtown Atlanta. Housing stock in Collier Heights features many styles of Ranch Houses, as well as American Small Houses and SplitLevels. The Collier Heights Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 23, 2009. Georgia State University graduate students surveyed the district and documented over 1,800 properties and the nomination was sponsored by the Collier Heights Neighborhood Association. The New Hope AME Church and Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 9, 2009. The church and former school building have existed at this site in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta since 1872. The oldest burial in the New Hope Cemetery dates from 1889.
Vidalia's J.D. Dickerson School in Toombs County is an excellent example of how African American schools transformed from the Rosenwald School era to the later Equalization School era of the 1960s. The school continues an educational purpose today with the campus buildings and gymnasium being used by primary school students.
