HPD remembers archaeologist Frank Schnell
Archaeologist Frank T. Schnell, Jr., 69, died on January 18, 2010. According to an article on the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Web site, his wife Gail said he fell last Saturday from a ladder while storing Christmas decorations in their attic in Bradenton, Florida. The Columbus native was known for his deep knowledge of area history and culture, much of it gleaned from extensive field work on prehistoric Indian mound villages such as Singer-Moye near Lumpkin, the Rood mounds near Omaha and the Cemochechobee mounds near Fort Gaines, Ga.

"Frank was a terrific mentor to me when I started working here in Georgia" said Dave Crass, HPD's Director and State Archaeologist. "I'll never forget his kindness and the patience he showed in introducing me to the rich archaeological resources of the lower Chattahoochee River Valley".
Schnell was a 15-year-old student at Columbus High School when his interest in archaeology was ignited in 1955 by a trip to Rood with a museum team excavating there. He started volunteering for field work during the summer and at 18 signed on with a Smithsonian Institution team salvaging artifacts before land was flooded by what today is Lake Eufaula.
He got a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Georgia, and was working on a doctorate at Tulane University in Louisiana when he came home in 1966 to take a job at the Columbus Museum. There he stayed until he retired as the curator of archaeology in 2001 and moved to Florida.
The museum that nurtured his first interest in the field became the place to which he devoted his career. "It was the area he wanted to work in all of his life, and it was one reason that he never left," said Gail Schnell. "He never really wanted to leave the museum."
According to an obituary posted on the Bradenton Herald's Web site, a memorial service will be at a later date in Columbus. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes and Crematory, 43rd Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice or the Haiti relief fund.
