Wal-Mart recently donated three historic houses in Forsyth to The Georgia Trust. The houses are now part of the Georgia Trust's Revolving Fund program, which provides effective alternatives to demolition or neglect of architecturally and historically significant properties.
"These houses are representative of the historic architecture of Forsyth," said Mark C. McDonald, President and CEO of The Georgia Trust. "Our goal is to save these historic properties and fulfill our obligation of helping the city of Forsyth find the best alternative for these houses" McDonald added.
Since 2006 the houses have been the subject of controversy as Forsyth city officials at the time rezoned a residential area to allow construction of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter. After the rezoning, Wal-Mart worked with community preservation leaders and The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation to reach an agreement to preserve three historic homes in the buffer strip required by Forsyth planning officials.

"The $8,665 matching Tourism Product Development grant will make it possible for us to complete the African American Heritage Site, provide tours and living history events more often and make the Nacoochee Slave Cabin the focus of our Folklife Festival next September 3," announced Folk Pottery Museum Director Chris Brooks, who is also Curator of the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association (SNCA) Heritage Project. "We'll be able to finish the cabin restoration (begun with a previous grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission) and improve access to the structure. We'll be able to recreate period landscaping and incorporate displays of artifacts and signage for selfguided tours. We'll train interpreters to enhance the visitor's experience at the annual festivals and seasonal demonstrations of folk life skills, tools, and traditions that were common to all cultures of early settlers in this Appalachian region. It is even more important to present this site to the public as we begin a national observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War in 2011."
The Heritage Project Creator and Coordinator Caroline Crittenden notes further that although there were relatively few bondsmen in the northeast Georgia Mountains, many of the former slaves who lived and labored in Nacoochee Valley before 1865 settled in the Bean Creek Community after emancipation. "The descendants of slaves and slave owners have worked together to preserve this antebellum cabin and document this unique and largely untold history of hardships and human relationships from the early 1800s to the 21st Century," notes Crittenden.

The grant project begins immediately and will continue to April 30 using the labor and expertise of local craftsmen. John Erbele, Chairman of the White County Development Authority and ardent advocate for heritage tourism, sponsored the project on behalf of White County for the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association.
Vernacular Architecture Forum seeks nominations
The Paul E. Buchanan Award was instituted by VAF in 1993 to recognize contributions to the study and preservation of vernacular architecture and the cultural landscape that do not take the form of books or published work. Hundreds of studies, reports, documentation projects, restoration plans, National Register nominations, exhibits, video/digital media productions and public programs are completed each year without the benefit of distribution or recognition beyond the limited audience for which they were commissioned. Nonetheless, many of these efforts can serve to inform and inspire us all.
