Tuesday, May 4 - Georgia Preservation Month 2010 kicks off with Preservation 101, a daylong orientation to the services and programs offered by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, The Georgia Trust and the DeKalb History Center. Preservation 101 will take place on Tuesday, May 4, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Historic Dekalb County Courthouse in downtown Decatur (above). Thursdays in May - The Georgia Trust will co-sponsor with the Historic Preservation Division again this year a Preservation Month Lecture Series on Thursday nights May 6, 20 and 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Rhodes Hall in Atlanta and on May 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hay House in Macon. The topics will include sustainability and preservation, modern architecture, and historic landscapes. The lecture series is free and open to the public. HPD's Joy Melton receives Georgia Trust Scholarship

HPD's African American Programs Intern Joy Melton was recently honored as a Georgia Trust 2010 Scholarship Award recipient at the Georgia Trust Annual Meeting in Rome, Georgia. Joy's scholarship was from the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, which preserves four house museums in Georgia including the Rankin House in Columbus; the Stetson-Sanford House in Milledgeville and the Founders Exhibit in Waycross. The Andrew Low House in Savannah is the State Society headquarters. The awards ceremony took place at the historic Rome City Auditorium

After the ceremony, Joy and other attendees enjoyed lunch at the Metropolitan United Methodist Church, a historically African American church whose congregation is 142 years old. Joy received her Bachelors of Architecture from Tuskegee University and is currently working to complete a masters degree in the Heritage Preservation Program at Georgia State University. Joy thanks all that helped her to obtain this award and looks forward to a future career in preservation.
National Register News
The County Training School--Vienna
The County Training School--Vienna, located in Vienna (Dooly County) was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on April 7, 2010. It was built in 1926 at a cost of $17,737. The Rosenwald Fund provided $1,700 toward the cost of construction. The school reflects the architecture of the educational buildings of the 1920s, as well as the ethnic heritage and social history of its time. The County Training School-Vienna was renamed the Vienna High and Industrial School in 1959. A new school building was added to the property that same year to provide additional classroom space for the expanding high school. This mid-century building's design was

RFP for Architectural Preservation Services
The City of Vienna and Dooly County, Georgia are seeking proposals for historic preservation planning services for the completion of construction specification drawings for the historic Dooly County Courthouse building (above) constructed circa 1892 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Partial funding for this project will be from a federal Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the Historic Preservation Division. Proposals must be submitted by May 7. Available grants
NTHP pilot grant program for historic school buildings The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, is currently seeking applications for a new pilot grant program that will fund the stabilization or rehabilitation of historic school buildings by providing funding for construction expenses. Once construction is complete, these buildings must be open to the public for use by the community. Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, government agencies, and school districts/school boards are eligible to apply. Religious organizations are not eligible for funding. The maximum grant amount will be $50,000. Grant applications must be postmarked by April 30. NEH Challenge Grants These matching grants are intended to help organizations secure longterm improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Grants may be used to establish or enhance endowments or spend-down funds (that is, funds that are invested, with both the income and the principal being expended over a defined period of years) to support ongoing program activities. Funds may also be used for one-time capital expenditures (such as construction and renovation, purchase of equipment, and acquisitions) that bring long-term benefits to the institution and to the humanities more broadly. Applications are welcome from colleges and universities, museums, public libraries, research institutions, historical societies and historic sites, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other nonprofit entities. Activities supported Challenge grant funds (both federal and nonfederal

NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions The National Endowment for the Humanities has a Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions program to help libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities improve preservation and care for their collections. Awards of up to $6,000 support collection assessments, consultation, training, and disaster and emergency planning. The application deadline is May 18. Guidelines for the program are available at www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html. Nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies, and tribal governments are eligible for the grants. FY 2010 Save America's Treasures grants Grants are available for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and historic structures and sites. Intellectual and cultural artifacts include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture, and works of art. Historic structures and sites include historic districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects. Grants are awarded to Federal, state, local, and tribal government entities, and non-profit organizations through a competitive matching-grant program. Preservation Services Fund Grants Administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, these grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies for preservation planning and education efforts. USDA Rural Development's Rural Business Opportunity Grant (RBOG) program The RBOG program promotes sustainable economic development in rural communities with exceptional needs through provision of training and technical assistance for business development, entrepreneurs, and economic development officials and to assist with economic development planning. To be eligible for funding, an applicant must be a public body, non-profit corporation, Indian Tribe or cooperative with members that are primarily rural residents. Applicants must also have significant expertise in the activities proposed and the financial strength to ensure the objectives of the proposed grant can be accomplished. Applications are due June 28.
