Preservation Awards ceremony in Rome on April 9. For more than 30 years, the Trust has recognized preservation projects and individuals in the state who have made significant contributions to the field of historic preservation. Awards are presented on the basis of the contributions of the person or project to the community and/or state and on compliance to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. A collaborative effort between New South Associates, the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Natural Resources, the Georgia Transmission Corporation, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and several architectural consulting firms was recognized with a Preservation Service Award for the publication "The Ranch House in Georgia: Guidelines for Evaluation," a guide that recognizes the Ranch House in Georgia as a significant architectural style and provides guidelines for determining it's eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. Reminder: 2010 Georgia Centennial Farm nominations deadline is April 30
The Georgia Centennial Farm Program was created to draw attention to historic farms and to encourage their preservation. Nominees must be a working farm with a minimum of 10 acres actively involved in agricultural production or generate at least $1,000 in annual income. In addition, farms must be continuously farmed for at least 100 years and owned by members of the same family for at least 100 years or be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Since starting in 1993, the program has recognized 359 farms around the state. The Centennial Farm Program is administered by: the Historic Preservation Division; Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; Georgia Department of Agriculture; Georgia Forestry Commission; and the Georgia National Fair and Agricenter. Nominations are due on April 30, 2010.

MayDay: Saving Our History
The American Association for State and Local History, Heritage Preservation, and the Heritage Emergency National Task Force are encouraging historic preservation organizations to participate in MayDay, an annual national effort to prepare for disasters on May 1, 2010. Heritage Preservation is collecting examples of MayDay programs to share online. Contributors will be entered in a drawing for disaster supplies. To be designated, applicants must demonstrate their programs: 1) provide volunteers with opportunities to contribute in direct and tangible ways to preservation, protection, and promotion of historic properties, 2) address an unfilled need in heritage preservation through the use of volunteers; and 3) demonstrate innovative and creative use of volunteer assistance. The program is administered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the Department of the Interior. MESDA issues call for papers

The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) seeks papers for its biennial MESDA Conference in American Material Culture, October 28-30, 2010 at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center in Madison, Georgia. Papers on topics relating to early American and southern material culture are encouraged from scholars, curators, and graduate students in American studies, southern studies, decorative arts, history, art history and other related fields. Subjects with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of material culture are highly encouraged. Proposals will be accepted for individual papers or for panel sessions. Available grants
NTHP pilot grant program for historic school buildings The National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, is currently seeking applications for a new pilot grant program that will fund the stabilization or rehabilitation of historic school buildings by providing funding for construction expenses. Once construction is complete, these buildings must be open to the public for use by the community. Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, government agencies, and school districts/school boards are eligible to apply. Religious organizations are not eligible for funding. The maximum grant amount will be $50,000. Grant applications must be postmarked by April 30. NEH Challenge Grants These matching grants are intended to help organizations secure longterm improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Grants may be used to establish or enhance endowments or spend-down funds (that is, funds that are invested, with both the income and the principal being expended over a defined period of years) to support ongoing program activities. Funds may also be used for one-time capital expenditures (such as construction and renovation, purchase of equipment, and acquisitions) that bring long-term benefits to the institution and to the humanities more broadly. Applications are welcome from colleges and universities, museums, public libraries, research institutions, historical societies and historic sites, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other nonprofit entities. Activities supported Challenge grant funds (both federal and nonfederal together) must provide long-term benefits to the humanities. Applications are due on May 5. NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions The National Endowment for the Humanities has a Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions program to help libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities improve preservation and care for their collections. Awards of up to $6,000 support collection assessments, consultation, training, and disaster and emergency planning. The application deadline is May 18. Guidelines for the program are available at www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html. Nonprofit organizations, state and local government agencies, and tribal governments are eligible for the grants. FY 2010 Save America's Treasures grants

Grants are available for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and historic structures and sites. Intellectual and cultural artifacts include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture, and works of art. Historic structures and sites include historic districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects. Grants are awarded to Federal, state, local, and tribal government entities, and non-profit organizations through a competitive matching-grant program. Preservation Services Fund Grants Administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, these grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and public agencies for preservation planning and education efforts. Grant awards range from $500 to $5,000. Applications are due on June 1.
