Federal funding for 2010 increased
The Federal FY 2010 budget bill, "making appropriations for the Department of the Interior, environment, and related agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2010, and for other purposes," passed both the House and Senate on Oct. 29 and was signed into law by the President on Oct. 30. Among other items the bill includes $79.5 million for the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), $10 million more than FY 2009. The fund includes support for State Historic Preservation Offices and Tribal Historic Preservation Offices.

Vienna was recently designated as a Preserve America Community.
Six communities recently designated in Georgia The Preserve America program recognizes communities that protect and celebrate their image; use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization; and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs.
First Lady Michelle Obama recently designated 33 Preserve America Communities with a letter and certificate. Among these were 6 in Georgia: Crawford County, Jefferson, Montezuma, St. Marys, Valdosta, and Vienna. There are now a total of 32 designated communities in Georgia.

programs provide volunteers with opportunities to contribute in direct and tangible ways to the preservation, protection, and promotion of historic properties; address an otherwise unfilled need in heritage preservation through the use of volunteer efforts; and demonstrate innovative and creative use of volunteer assistance in areas such as youth involvement, volunteer training, public education, and public/ private partnerships.
Preserve America Stewards is administered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the Department of the Interior. An application form and further information is available at www.preserveamerica.gov/ stewards.html. The next deadlines are December 1, 2009, and March 1, 2010. Preserve America Stewards will receive a designation letter and certificate of recognition signed by First Lady Michelle Obama.
National Trust president to retire
On November 3 it was announced that Richard Moe, the long-serving president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will retire next spring after 17 years in the position. Moe is the seventh and longest-serving president of the organization. "It has been an enormous privilege to be associated with the National Trust over these years," Moe said in a statement. "It has been the most fulfilling professional experience I have ever had. Both the people and the places I've encountered have been fabulous, and I will never forget them." Moe served as a keynote speaker for the 2002 Georgia Preservation Conference, held in Macon. A committee of National Trust for Historic Preservation board members has been formed to search for a qualified successor. Visit the National Trust's Web site at www.preservationnation.org.

2010 Most Endangered list
Dorchester Academy in Midway was included in the 2009 list.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting nominations for the 2010 edition of its annual 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list. To be included in the list a site must have architectural, artistic, and/or historic importance; a need for immediate action to stop or reverse serious threats; and realistic solutions that can help mitigate the threats faced in the short or long term. Available grants
Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program, National Park Service The National Park Service is seeking project proposals from government agencies and private organizations for its Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program for summer 2010. The program annually sponsors 15 to 18 interns. Costs are shared between the NPS and the intern sponsor. The intern sponsor is expected to contribute $5,679 toward the costs. The NPS does recruitment, application processing, payroll, and career mentoring. Conservation Assessment Program, Heritage Preservation Heritage Preservation is accepting applications for 2010 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) grants. The program helps small to midsized museums with assessments of collections, environmental conditions, and sites. Museums with buildings older than 50 years receive additional funds for a historic structure assessment to identify priorities for care of the building(s). National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Public Programs grants The Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities funds public projects at museums, libraries, historic sites, and other historical and cultural organizations. The organization offers grants that support historic site interpretation, exhibits, reading or film discussion series, symposia, and digital projects. Coastal Incentive grants, Georgia Coastal Resources Division The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is administering Coastal Incentive grants to Qualified Local Governments, non-DNR state agencies, and educational institutions within the 11-county coastal area. Successful grants allow regional and local coastal issues to be defined and addressed creatively and proactively at the grass-roots level.
