Dr. Jeffrey Glover (left) and several of his students carefully remove soil from fallen tree root balls in Oakland Cemetery.
When a violent tornado struck Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery on March 14, 2008, it toppled trees and damaged scores of historic monuments. A number of the toppled trees were growing over grave shafts. When they fell, they pulled up enormous amounts of earth, which potentially included the remains of the interred. Recognizing that any human remains would have to be removed from the root balls before the debris was removed from the cemetery, Historic Oakland Foundation Director of Restoration and Landscapes Kevin Kuharic requested assistance from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). State Archaeologist Dr. Dave Crass invited Dr. Jeffrey Glover, an assistant professor of archaeology at Georgia State University (GSU), to involve his students in the fieldwork.
The collective efforts revealed that none of the remaining soil included human remains. One very large oak tree root system incorporated two Civil War-era porcelain buttons. Their small size indicated that they were shirt collars or cuff buttons, probably related to a skull fragment that had been found earlier. That fragment and the buttons will be reinterred in the original grave shaft. Other artifacts were removed,

NCSHPO appoints a new president
The National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO) has appointed Ruth Pierpont, director of the New York SHPO as their new president. She replaces Jay D. Vogt, director of South Dakota's SHPO, who stepped down after four years as president. During his time in office, Vogt served on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the National Archaeology Task Force. He also testified before the House Interior Appropriations Committee twice. "The experience as NCSHPO president has been challenging and rewarding, and I am glad I had the opportunity to be part of the national historic preservation movement," said Vogt. On March 25, the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced plans to create a new national office in Seattle that will focus on finding ways to promote "green" development by re-using and retrofitting existing structures, and on integrating new projects into neighborhoods without destroying local character. Funded in part by a two-year $50,000 grant from the city of Seattle, the office will be headed by local former developer Liz Dunn. National Trust president Richard Moe said in a statement that "The establishment of this field office will further the goals of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Sustainability Program, which include promoting building reuse, reinvestment in older communities, and the greening of existing buildings to combat climate change. With more than 43 percent of the nation's carbon emissions coming from the operation of buildings, reusing and improving the energy efficiency of older and historic buildings is an essential part of a sustainable future."
