A new look for Preservation Georgia Online!
HPD is very pleased to announce that beginning March 27, this newsletter will be sent to you in a new format that will allow us to include photos and colors. The new version will be optimized for viewing with HTML, so it will resemble a Web page. A plain text version will also be viewable. The content and average length of the newsletter will not change. Common functions like subscribing, unsubscribing, and changing your email address will now be handled through forms via our Web site rather than by email. We are very excited to finally be able to "brighten up" our newsletter and look forward to hearing your feedback.

Moore's Bridge Park & Horace King Historic Site preserved in Carroll County
The Trust for Public Land (TPL) and Carroll County announced on February 13 that a 485-acre property that buffers 1.4 miles of the Chattahoochee River and which served for more than a century as the "gateway" to Carroll County has been permanently protected. This land purchase will protect an area rich in Civil War, African American and Native American history and will give the county a chance to restore a historically significant wooden covered bridge that once crossed the Chattahoochee River. The bridge was built by Horace King, an African American master builder who was one of the most respected bridge builders in West Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi from the 1830s through the 1880s. He constructed bridges over nearly every major river in the area, including many over the Chattahoochee.

TPL bought a 242-acre parcel plus an adjacent 243-acre parcel before selling the combined 485 acres to the county today for $4,474,000, a price $641,000 below appraised fair market value. TPL paid for its work on the project, donated staff and legal time, and also contributed $250,000 towards the acquisition by the county. The county bought the property from TPL using existing SPLOST funds earmarked for greenspace acquisition. Historic Augusta seeks nominations for 2009 Preservation Awards
Historic Augusta's Preservation Awards Committee is currently seeking nominations for the 2009 awards to be given at the organization's annual meeting to be held in November. In order to be considered for an award, a property must be on or eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, either individually or as part of a historic district, and the project must be completed. The preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration of the building should have been completed within the last two years. Preference will be given to those projects which included a major rehabilitation work such as saving a building from an uncertain fate, returning a dilapidated structure into a viable resource, making extensive interior or exterior repairs, and returning a structure to its original appearance with appropriate historic materials. Outstanding continued commitment to a property is recognized through Stewardship Awards. To nominate a building or for more information, contact Robyn Mainor by telephone at 706-724-0436, e-mail at robyn@historicaugusta.org or mail at P.O. Box 37, Augusta, GA 30903. http://historicaugusta.org/
