ordinance in 2005 and appointed citizens to serve as its historic preservation commission (HPC). The HPC has had a good relationship with the numerous communities, preservation organizations, and the many preservationists throughout Chatham County. In addition, Chatham County has been working diligently for the past four years to incorporate historic preservation into their local planning process. The HPC and their staff have done much to educate the public on the numerous benefits of historic preservation planning.
The CLG program extends the federal and state preservation program to the local level, expanding the scope of local responsibilities and opportunities for preservation. Participation requires the community to create a preservation ordinance that establishes a design review commission. Chatham County is now eligible for federal grants administered by the Historic Preservation Division, Department of Natural Resources. These grants may be used for a variety of preservation activities, including historic resource surveys and nominations, educational and promotional activities and publications, heritage tourism studies and predevelopment plans.

The Ball Ground Historic District, located near Canton (Cherokee County), was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 4, 2009. The name "Ball Ground" reputedly derives from the Cherokee Indian game that may have occurred near the town site. The town owes its growth to the arrival of the Marietta and North Georgia (later L & N) Railroad in 1882, and the development of the marble industry in north Georgia in the late 19th century. The town was a primary location for the buying and selling of goods and services for northeastern Cherokee and adjacent counties. Much of this commerce was related to the marble finishing industry, which brought banks, general merchandise stores, professional offices, and other establishments to the community. The mail-order monument business was a major catalyst for growth. The district contains a representative collection of the types of commercial buildings commonly found in small Georgia towns, as well as good examples of residential types and styles. There are also a few large industrial and warehouse buildings related to the marble and monument industry, usually located near the railroad. Ellen Ehrenhard
Unfortunately, we have some sad news-Mrs. Ellen Ehrenhard, former regional preservation planner, consultant and executive director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society passed away on Sunday, Dec. 6. Her obituary in the December 14 edition of the Newnan Times-Herald may be read online at www.times-herald.com/obits/Obit-Ehrenhard928235. A memorial service is planned for this Saturday, December 19 at 11:00am at Newnan Presbyterian Church, 38 Greenville Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the Historic Pipe Organ Restoration Fund of Newnan Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1107, Newnan, Ga., 30264.
Available grants
Battlefield Project Grants, American Battlefield Protection Program of the National Park Service The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) of the National Park Service invites non-profit groups, academic institutions, and local, regional, state, and tribal governments, and other private sector organizations to submit applications for grants. The purpose of this grant program is to provide seed money for projects that lead directly to the identification, preservation and interpretation of battlefield land and/or historic sites associated with battlefields. National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Public Programs grants

The Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities funds public projects at museums, libraries, historic sites, and other historical and cultural organizations. The organization offers grants that support historic site interpretation, exhibits, reading or film discussion series, symposia, and digital projects. The application deadline for funds from the America's Historical and Cultural Organizations and Interpreting America's Historic Places programs is January 13, 2010.
Coastal Incentive grants, Georgia Coastal Resources Division The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is administering Coastal Incentive grants to Qualified Local Governments, non-DNR state agencies, and educational institutions within the 11-county coastal area. Successful grants allow regional and local coastal issues to be defined and addressed creatively and proactively at the grass-roots level. FFY 2010 Historic Preservation Fund grants for Certified Local Governments Grants are available for projects that aid in the preservation of historic properties. Eligible survey and planning activities include surveys, National Register nominations, design guidelines, brochures, web site development, heritage education materials, workshops/conferences, etc. Eligible predevelopment projects include activities such as historic structure reports, preservation plans, or architectural drawings and specifications.
