National Register news
Fairway Oaks-Greenview Historic District
The Fairway Oaks-Greenview Historic District in Savannah (Chatham County) was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on March 31, 2009. It is the first mid-20th-century suburban residential district to be listed in the National Register in Georgia and one of just a few in the nation. The district consists of two contiguous and historically related suburban residential subdivisions and was a precedent-setting mid-20th-century suburban residential development in Savannah. The earlier and larger subdivision is Fairway Oaks; it was developed between 1950 and 1957. Development of the adjacent Greenview subdivision was begun in 1956 and continued into the early 1960s. Fairway Oaks was the first mid-20th-century suburban residential development to feature the new-to-Savannah curvilinear street layout with cul-de-sacs. The development was also the first "upscale" suburban development in the Savannah area to successfully capitalize on new ideas about "country" living in the suburbs and a "country-club"

lifestyle fostered by proximity to a county park and golf course. In doing so, it broke with Savannah's 200-year tradition of gridiron-plan development based on the 1733 Oglethorpe plan. The development's high visibility and success set precedents for subsequent suburban developments. The neighborhood's homeowner association, the Fairway Oaks Association, was one of the earliest such organizations in Savannah and Georgia. The district contains what is believed to be one of the best collections of mid-20th-century houses in Savannah, including excellent and representative examples of American Small Houses, Ranch Houses, Split Levels, and two-story traditionals. The most prevalent architectural style is Colonial Revival; Modern and Contemporary styles are also present. Following national trends, Ranch Houses predominate, comprising nearly two-thirds of the housing stock. The district also contains important house designs by noted local and regional architects. Harris-Murrow-Trowell House, Oliver
The Harris-Murrow-Trowell House, located in Oliver (Screven County), was listed in the National Register on March 30, 2009. Built c.18881889, the house is a good example of a Gabled Wing Cottage type house. It features a moderately pitched standing seam gable roof with

Dorchester Academy in Midway on National Trust's 11 Most Endangered list
On April 28, the National Trust for Historic Preservation released its 2009 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. On the list was Dorchester Academy, located in Midway (Liberty County). One of the earliest schools for African Americans in the state of Georgia and a National Historic Landmark, it was founded in 1871 by the American Missionary Association as a school for freed slaves. When the Academy ceased operating as a school in 1940, a 1934 boys' dormitory was soon turned into a community center. At the height of the civil rights movement, Dorchester Academy hosted Citizen Education Workshops sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to train grassroots leaders from all over the South and send these leaders home to instruct their neighbors about their legal rights and responsibilities. Later, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ralph Abernathy and Dr. Joseph Lowery spent time at the Academy preparing

for the Birmingham march. Dr. King also wrote and practiced portions of his "I Have a Dream," speech at Dorchester Academy.
Today, the only remaining building on the campus is the 1934 dormitory, a red brick, Greek Revival structure. It is deteriorating and structurally compromised. The community does not have the financial resources to rescue the building. The cost of completely restoring the building has been estimated at $1-1.5 million. The Dorchester improvement Association was created with the goal of completing this task and transforming the building into a museum and community facility.

The Tybee Island Light Station, built between 1773 and 1867 and maintained through a partnership between the Coast Guard, the city of Tybee Island, and the Tybee Island Historical Society.
On March 27th, Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Carl Levin (D-MI) introduced S. 715, the National Lighthouse Stewardship Act. This bill would create a three-year competitive grant program to be administered by the Department of Interior that will help preserve and rehabilitation historic lighthouses across the country.
Senator Snowe states in her press release that "By helping to provide the necessary resources to ensure our lighthouses are not damaged or lost, this legislation will not only preserve a significant component of our heritage, but also go a long way in helping to boost local tourism and spur job growth in our communities." S. 715 would authorize $20 million for a three-year competitive grant pilot program that would provide funds to stewards of historic lighthouses to help them preserve and rehabilitate the lighthouses under their care. Eligible grant recipients would include States, units of local government and nonprofit historic societies.
