Governor Perdue signs the proclaimation declaring May Archaeology Month
2009.
May is also Archaeology Month in Georgia. This year marks the 15th anniversary of The Society for Georgia Archaeology's (SGA) archaeology awareness promotion, which fosters better public awareness of archaeology and a sense of stewardship for our state's archaeological sites. This year's theme is Mounds in Our Midst: Monuments of Prehistoric Culture in Georgia.
The annual spring meeting of the SGA, which is open to the public, will be held at Wesleyan University in Macon on May 16. The program will highlight the archaeology of Georgia's artificial earthen mounds. Created by diverse Native American cultures, mainly between 500 B.C. A.D. 1550, these remarkable monuments are reminders of prehistoric societies that once flourished in every corner of Georgia.
Throughout the month of May, organizations, museums, parks, and historic sites in communities across the state are sponsoring educational programs and events to promote public awareness of the existence and value of Georgia's archaeological resources. New report on small town economic development strategies
The University of North Carolina School of Government has partnered with the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center to produce Small Towns, Big Ideas, a report that identifies and documents fifty small towns with populations of fewer than 10,000 residents that have implemented successful or innovative approaches to community economic development. This collection of searchable case studies is a response to the demand from civic leaders in North Carolina for real stories, from real places that are confronting real challenges similar to those facing small communities everywhere. Included in the report are Colquitt and Douglas, both in Georgia. Visit www.sog.unc.edu/ programs/cednc/stbi/.
