Archaeology project news
The Archaeology Unit partnered with the Council on American Indian Concerns (CAIC) and the Lamar Institute to excavate a prehistoric Indian grave that was endangered by naturally-occurring erosion on Ossabaw Island. The burial, which was situated on a bluff, turned out to be a cremation pit. These are very rare, and are generally associated with the first Ossabaw inhabitants, Late Archaic peoples. Carbon was recovered from the feature and will be submitted for a C14 date. Following analysis and reporting, the remains will be reinterred under supervision of the CAIC.
Deputy State Archaeologist Underwater Chris McCabe responded to a resident's report of a shipwreck on Cumberland Island. While still under investigation, the wreck appears to be a small craft that sank at its moorings, and may date to the 18th or very early 19th centuries.

November 2008 issue of Reflections is now available online
The November 2008 issue of Reflections, the quarterly publication of the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network, has been posted on HPD's website at http://www.gashpo.org/Assets/Documents/Reflections_November_2008.pdf. This issue features the Albany Movement, a consortium of community activists, students and grassroots organizations who challenged segregation of public facilities in Albany in 1961. Albany's Freedom Singers emerged at African American churches during this movement, and their songs became a stalwart of the civil rights movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed over 1,500 people during the movement and joined 700 persons who were jailed. Today, the Albany Civil Rights Movement Museum at Old Mt. Zion Church is a historic resource that interprets the significance of the Albany Movement. Community

residents in Atlanta's Pittsburgh Historic District share oral histories of the neighborhood and the Crogman School that is a community landmark. The Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was designated by Congress as a new National Heritage Area in 2006. Since then, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida have established the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, and are developing a management plan for the National Heritage Area.
