Historic cemeteries have benefited from Georgia Heritage Grant funds
With the current emphasis on historic cemeteries through the Preserve America program, we thought it would be of interest to identify recent Georgia Heritage grant awards for historic cemetery projects. In 1999 the Hudson Nash House and Cemetery in Gwinnett County received a predevelopment grant for $17,400 through the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners to conduct an archaeological survey and preservation plan for both the house and cemetery.
For the SFY 2000 round of grants, the Locust Grove Cemetery, located near Sharon in Taliaferro County, received $30,000 for a preservation master plan to help identify measures that needed to be taken to stabilize and save the property. Much of the site had been overrun by vegetation that had damaged grave markers and made the area deteriorate considerably. The cemetery is the site of an early Catholic church and cemetery. It is still functioning today, although burials are infrequent. The site also has ties to settlers from Maryland, Irish and French immigrants, and African Americans.
The first recipient of a cemetery "bricks and mortar" grant is the Old City Cemetery in Sandersville. The Washington County Historical Society received $18,000 to repair walkways, grave markers, and walls in the cemetery. Created in 1831 on the site of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Sandersville, the cemetery is a resting place for Georgia Governor Thomas William Hardwick, five state representatives, three state senators, ten Sandersville mayors, and soldiers from the Civil War through World War II. The cemetery also was the site of a skirmish with Wheeler's Cavalry during Sherman's March to the Sea and is part of the March to the Sea Heritage Trail.
If you are interested in historic cemeteries and in ways to protect and promote them, join us on November 1-2 in Augusta at the statewide cemetery conference Eternal Places: Discovering Georgia's Historic Cemeteries. For a conference

brochure, visit HPD's website at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=395 or contact conference coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole.moore@dnr.state.ga.us.
To continue the preservation of cemeteries as well as other community landmarks, funding for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program must increase. You can help by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the $25 tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program.
