HPD staff member named to Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission
HPD's African American programs coordinator, Jeanne Cyriaque, has just been appointed to the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission.
The Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor was designated by Congress in September, 2006, to recognize the important contributions made to American culture and history by Africans and African-Americans who settled in coastal areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. The Gullah/Geechee people represent the descendents of enslaved Africans from west and central Africa who were brought to these coastal areas to work plantations. The Heritage Corridor will preserve and interpret their unique language, arts and crafts, religious beliefs, folklore, rituals and foods.
The Secretary of Interior was charged with establishing the Commission to oversee development and management of the new Heritage Corridor. This Commission includes four individuals nominated by the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) of South Carolina and two individuals each nominated by the SHPOs for Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.
Two individuals from South Carolina and one individual each from Florida, Georgia and North Carolina who are recognized experts in historic preservation, anthropology, and folklore were nominated by the National Park Service.
Jeanne has been named Georgia's recognized expert. Georgia's other commissioners are: Charles H. Hall and Althea Natalga Sumpter; alternates are Amir Jamal Tour and Deborah L. Mack.
Congratulations Jeanne!

National Register news

The following properties were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 27, 2007:
Klondike Historic District, located in east DeKalb County three miles south of Lithonia - The Klondike Historic District is a small crossroads community. Houses are interspersed with wooded lots on both sides of Klondike and South Goddard roads, the principal streets. A stone commercial building constructed c. 1900 is located at the crossroads. The oldest houses were built in the late 19th century and represent common Georgia house types, such as the center-hall, saddlebag, Queen Anne, gabled-wing and New South house types. Granite, quarried at nearby Arabia Mountain, is a common building material. Many barns and other agricultural outbuildings remain from the time farming provided a means of occupation.
Third District A & M School/Georgia Southwestern College Historic District, located in Sumter County, southeast of downtown Americus - The Third District A & M School/Georgia Southwestern College Historic District is significant in the areas of architecture and education for its historic campus buildings that were built as the school progressed from a regional high school to a teacher's college to a four-year institution. The buildings remain relatively intact and reflect the use of the Colonial and Classical Revival styles often found on school campuses. The school began as part of a state-supported, regional high school system, the A & M schools, which was created by the Georgia General Assembly in 1905 to put a high school in each congressional district. Many of these schools became junior colleges, and in the case of the Third District A & M School it became the State Agricultural and Normal College in 1926. In 1931, it became the Georgia Southern College, remaining a two-year institution until 1964.
West Cloverhurst Historic District, located adjacent to the Milledge Avenue Historic District, south of downtown Athens in Clarke County - The West Cloverhurst Historic District is a residential neighborhood that developed as the nearby University of Georgia prospered in the decades before and after World War II. It is locally significant as an excellent example of a residential suburban development. Its significance lies in the areas of community planning and development and architecture. Most of the houses date from the 1890s through 1955 and represent house types and architectural styles popular in Georgia during that time period including Craftsman bungalows, English Vernacular Revival and Colonial Revival-style houses, American Small Houses, and postWorld War II ranch houses.
