Tag orders reach 945!
Orders of historic preservation license plates have now reached 945, leaving only 55 more to make our goal of 1,000! Special thanks to Pratt Cassity for his eloquent promotion of the new tag at the recent HPC training in Elberton. To everyone who has generously promoted this project, thank you for your continued support. We are so close to reaching our goal of obtaining additional funding for preservation projects across the state. If we reach 1,000 orders by December 31, money will be available for next year's Georgia Heritage Grant cycle (SFY 2009). For more information, you may contact Carole Moore, grants coordinator, at Carole.Moore@dnr.state.ga.us or 404-463-8434. To order your preservation tag, visit HPD's web site at www.gashpo.org.

The October issue of Reflections, the quarterly publication of the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network, is available online at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=259. This issue features a successful adaptive use of a historic school building: Main High School in Rome, Floyd County. In partnership with the City of Rome, Main High School alumni and several community-based nonprofits now occupy the classrooms in this historic African American school building and provide mentoring programs and community services. Kennesaw State University professor Tom Scott remembers Dr. Susie Wheeler, 2007 recipient of a Governor's Award in the Humanities. Historic Cemetery Conference held in Augusta
On November 1-2, over 130 participants attended the Eternal Places: Discovering Georgia's Historic Cemeteries conference in Augusta. Partially funded through a Preserve America grant, the conference was cosponsored by Historic Augusta, Inc., the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and Central Savannah River Area Regional Development Center. The program was designed to provide participants with a broader understanding of Georgia's historic cemeteries and to present information to assist in their preservation. It also focused on the importance of heritage tourism to a community and its potential link with historic cemeteries. "Success stories" about cemetery projects in Baldwin County, Athens, Augusta, Savannah, and Atlanta were highlighted. Conference attendees enjoyed both Augusta's hospitality and historic resources with an opening reception at historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church and cemetery and closing tours of Magnolia and Cedar Grove cemeteries. Evaluations for Eternal Places were extremely positive and confirmed strong interest in the identification and preservation of the state's historic cemeteries. HPD would like to thank our cosponsors, speakers, Preserve America, and the many individuals and organizations that made this conference possible.

Call for nominations - 2008 Governor's Awards in the Humanities
Each spring the Georgia Humanities Council honors the "humanities heroes" of our state through the presentation of the Governor's Awards in the Humanities. The Governor presents these awards to individuals and organizations that build community, character, and citizenship in Georgia through public humanities education.

Recipients of the Governor's Awards in the Humanities are nominated by the public, reviewed by a committee of the Georgia Humanities Council Board, and selected ultimately by the Governor. Presentations occur at a luncheon at the Old Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta. Hundreds of citizens from around the state attend.
To nominate a person or organization in your area, go to http://www.georgiahumanities.org/programs/gov/index.html December 1, 2007 is the nomination postmark deadline.
