Georgia Heritage Grant Funds help preserve sites associated with women artists
Resources associated with prominent women across the state have received funding through the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. Funds have been used to stabilize, repair, and plan for the continued use of structures that help connect us to the complex history of women in Georgia. Properties associated with blues singer Gertrude "Ma" Rainey Pridgett and with artist Mary Hambidge are the focus of the third installment of our Women's History Month series.
For the SFY 1998 round of grants, the Gertrude "Ma" Rainey Pridgett House in Columbus received $7,000 for electrical rewiring. Born in Columbus in 1886, Gertrude Pridgett made her first appearance on stage around 1900 in a local talent show called "Bunch of Blackberries." After marrying a fellow performer, Will "Pa" Rainey, Ma Rainey traveled throughout the South singing and dancing in black minstrel troupes. Her style of blues singing made her unique, and she enjoyed success throughout much of the 1920s. Ma Rainey, also known as "The Mother of the Blues," can be heard on 94 recordings, often alongside jazz notables such as Louis Armstrong and Tommy Dorsey. After traveling on the road for many years, Ma Rainey returned to Columbus in 1935, where she spent the last years of her life. The Ma Rainey Pridgett House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, was fully restored in 2006, and is now open to the public.
Located in Rabun County near the city of Dillard, The Hambidge Center is a nonprofit organization that offers artists the opportunity to work in an unstressed, natural atmosphere. The Center has received two Georgia Heritage Grants over the years to stabilize and repair significant structures on the property. In SFY 1997 the Hambidge Center Weave Shed received $22,500 to stabilize the second floor of the structure, implement handicap access, and drain and regrade the site. The Mary Hambidge House received $10,000 in SFY 2001 to repair the roof of the building. Both properties are located on the Hambidge Center's 600 acres covered by forests, streams, and meadows. Born in Brunswick in 1885, Mary Crovatt studied the classics at a finishing school in Massachusetts and later
moved to New York when she was in her twenties. She married Canadian-born artist and scholar Jay Hambidge, who pioneered the concept of "dynamic symmetry," the linking of nature's symmetry with that of human art objects. After her husband's death in 1924, Mary Hambidge went to a friend's summer home to pursue her passion of weaving. In 1934, the Jay Hambidge Art Foundation was created after Mary acquired enough money to purchase the 600 acres in Rabun County. The site eventually became the Hambidge Center, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
More money could be available to help save other historic resources related to prominent Georgia women by increasing funds available for Georgia Heritage Grants. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org. 1000 tags must be ordered by December 2007 before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 548.

Guidance material for rehabilitation information available from HPD
Our office has a supply of Preservation Briefs and Tech Notes provided by the National Park Service that can provide in-depth advice on most aspects of historic building rehabilitation. Additionally #35, "Appropriate Methods for Reducing Lead-Paint Hazards in Historic Housing," has been re-issued to reflect current regulatory standards. These informative brochures are also available on line at www.cr.nps.gov/hps/tps. Ced Dolder, the HPD historic tax incentives specialist/coordinator, can also provide you with copies upon request.
