Georgia Heritage Grant Funds help preserve historic military sites
Since 1995, the Georgia Heritage Grant Program has awarded six grants to help preserve four sites located on historic military fort complexes throughout the state. The money has been used to stabilize, rehabilitate, and help save these properties important to Georgia's military history. More money could be available to help save community landmarks like these, by increasing funds available for Georgia Heritage Grants. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. 1000 tags must be ordered before they can be manufactured. Current tag orders are at 737. For information on how to order your tag, visit HPD's website at www.gashpo.org.
Fort Jackson, located in Chatham County, received Georgia Heritage Grants in state fiscal years 2000, 2002, and 2003. Each grant provided funding to help stabilize and repair the brick masonry walls around the fort, including the moat retaining wall. Fort Jackson was built in 1808 for Savannah's harbor defense from foreign naval attack. The fort was last occupied by troops during the Civil War and was headquarters of the Confederate river batteries. Currently, the fort is a public historic site dedicated to providing educational, recreational, and tourism benefits for the community. More than 60,000 visitors a year enjoy historical interpretation, special events, and student programs centered around Fort Jackson.
For the 2002 round of grants, $10,000 was given to the City of Tybee Island for the Fort Screven Guard House. Funds were used to produce architectural drawings and specifications for the renovation of the historic military structure. Named after Revolutionary War hero General Joseph Screven, the fort was built in 1897 to provide a seacoast defense system to guard Tybee Island, Savannah, Brunswick, St. Mary's, and Darien as the United States was drawn into a war with Spain. Troops were stationed at the fort during the Spanish-American War,

World War I, and World War II. It was acquired by the city of Savannah after the Second World War.
Located in Banks County and the oldest of the forts, Fort Hollingsworth/White House received $7,000 in SFY 2000 for its preservation and stabilization. Built in 1792, the fort was constructed out of wood by settlers who sought protection from Native Americans. Over the years, the building exchanged hands and was left vacant until the White family bought the property in the mid-1800s and used the fort as their home. Descendants of the White family donated the property for historical interpretation and founded the Friends of the Fort non-profit group that is responsible for its upkeep and educational programs.
For the SFY 1996 round of grants, the Historic Quarters 1 at Fort Benning received $25,000 to remove lead-based paint, replace wood siding, and install thermal wall insulation. Fort Benning was established in 1918 and has housed troops on site since World War II. The Historic Quarters 1 is known as Riverside and was built in 1909 as a plantation house for Arthur Bussey. The army bought the land and transformed the house into the quarters for the Commanding General of the fort in 1918. Home to the U. S. Army Infantry School and a myriad of tenant units, the fort continues to be a hub for military activity in the state as well as the region.
