Increased tag sales goal for new year
As we begin 2007, it is important to realize that we have just 12 short months to reach our goal of 1,000 license plate orders. As of today, at the current rate of approximately 13 orders per week, we will accomplish this by December 1, just under the wire. However, if orders increase by only seven per week to a total of 20 per week, we should reach our target by the end of July. As you set your professional goals for the New Year, please include promotion of the preservation license tag to members of your organizations. Funding from tag sales could make a major difference to a building in need within your community. Please spread the word now! The current number of tag orders is 409.
For more information on how to order the historic preservation license plate or help spread the word, please contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404463-8434 or email her at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate, access the order form, and locate the nearest tag office, please visit HPD's website at www.gashpo.org.

Locust Grove Cemetery listed in the National Register on December 12, 2006
Located near Sharon in Taliferro County, Locust Grove Cemetery is a historically significant cemetery containing a unique collection of tombstones associated with the first Catholic settlement in Georgia. Locust Grove Cemetery is significant in art because it contains several very fine tombstones from the 1820s and 1830s that exemplify some of the highest form of materials and workmanship for that early era. The community dated from the 1790s when a group of Catholics came to Georgia from Maryland, to the then-frontier of the state, to establish a settlement in what was then Wilkes County. After receiving a Georgia Heritage grant from HPD, a professional preservation plan was published in 2000 and restoration of some tombstones took place in 2003.

HPD staff news
HPD's tax incentives specialist, Ced Dolder, was asked to submit her article on Savannah landscape architect, Clermont Lee, for the National Park Service's second volume of Pioneers of American Landscape Design. The article also appeared as an electronic obituary for The Cultural Landscape Foundation's November 2006 newsletter. The original essay was written for HPD's Women's History Initiative, authored by private consultants, about Georgia women's influence on the built environment, on file. The link to the article is found at www.tclf.org/pioneers/profiles/lee_clermont
