National Register news
The Macon Railway and Light Company Substation, located at 1015 Riverside Drive, Macon, Bibb County, was listed in the National Register on November 6, 2006. It is significant in the area of architecture as good example of an early 20th-century substation in which its plain exterior, which appears closer to a downtown commercial building, belies its function of housing technologically

advanced electrical transformers and other equipment. Its period of significance is from 1915, when it was constructed, until 1955. Since the late 1980s, the substation was used as a restaurant, which resulted in changes to the interior. A kitchen, bar, and dining room were added and part of a second floor was constructed. The most recent rehabilitation, which was approved by the National Park Service, preserved existing historic fabric to continue its use as a restaurant. Historic Augusta's Erick Montgomery publishes new Woodrow Wilson biography
HPD congratulates Erick Montgomery, executive director of Historic Augusta, on the recent publication of his biography of President Woodrow Wilson's boyhood years in Augusta during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Thomas Woodrow Wilson: Family Ties and Southern Perspectives focuses on the years the 28th president lived in the Presbyterian Manse in Augusta while his father served as pastor of the church across the street. The Wilsons' former home is now owned and operated as a house museum by Historic Augusta. In 1996, HPD awarded Historic Augusta a $10,000 Georgia Heritage grant for plaster repair in the Woodrow Wilson Boyhood Home. The book is available for $14.95 (soft-bound) and $29.95 (hard-bound). To order, contact Historic Augusta at (706) 724-0436 or www.historicaugusta.org.

Georgia Heritage Grant funds have helped preserve nine historic jails
Since its inception in 1995, the Georgia Heritage Grant Program has awarded money to help preserve nine historic jails throughout the state. Jails that have benefited from the grant program include: Candler County, Chattahoochee County, Clarke County, Colquitt County, Heard County, Lumpkin County, Putnam County, Turner County, and Rock Jail, located in Greene County.

Heard County Jail, located in Franklin, was awarded a State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2007 grant for $10,000 to repair the masonry exterior, gutters, and windows. The jail had previously received a predevelopment Georgia Heritage Grant in 2004 to complete a preservation plan to identify and make recommendations for remedying the building's cosmetic and structural problems. The jail was built overlooking the Chattahoochee River in 1912 and is the only building in Heard County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Complete with hanging gallows, trap door, and steel prisoner cages, the building serves as a museum and also houses the Heard County Historical Society.
In SFY 2003, the Chattahoochee County Jail, located in Cusseta, received $4,500 to prepare a preservation plan for the interior of the structure. Though the exterior of the jail, including the masonry and gutters, had been repaired with help from a $13,000 Georgia Heritage Grant in 1997, the interior was deteriorating. The preservation plan assessed the current condition of interior finishes, itemized what actions should be taken to protect historic materials, and provided scaled drawings of the interior spaces. The jail was constructed in 1902 in the Romanesque style.
The Colonial Revival style Putnam County Jail, located in Eatonton, received $16,100 in SFY 2002 to stabilize the building and replace the failing roof. Built in 1938 and designed by the Macon architectural firm Dennis and Dennis, the building functioned as a jail until 1993. Moisture exposure to the walls and roof caused deterioration, leaving the historic jail fragile and abandoned. The Georgia Heritage Grant funds helped to secure the building, and since then, the jail has been rehabilitated into a records storage facility.
More money could be available to help save historic jails like these, as well as other community landmarks, by increasing funds allotted to the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org. 1,000 tags must be ordered by December 2007 before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 435.
