Since 1995, 25 historic courthouses have benefited from Georgia Heritage Grants
Since its inception in 1995, the Georgia Heritage Grant Program has given money to help preserve 25 historic courthouse buildings throughout the state. The money has been used to stabilize, rehabilitate and plan for the continued use of these important community landmarks. County courthouses that have benefited from the grant program include: Brooks, Candler, Catoosa, Clinch, Crawford, Dawson, Haralson, Irwin, Jackson, Johnson, Lee, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Randolph, Spalding, Stewart, Taliaferro, Taylor, Telfair, Thomas, Treutlen, Union, and Wilcox.
For the SFY 2006 round of grants, the Jackson County Courthouse, located in Jefferson and built in 1879, was awarded $12,000 to complete a preservation plan. The plan identifies a course of action for the preservation and rehabilitation of the historic building and explores how the courthouse could be utilized in downtown Jefferson.
For the SFY 2005 round of grants, the Pike County Courthouse, located in Zebulon, received a $10,000 grant for a Historic Structure Report. The report helps document the building's history and physical changes that have occurred over time. It also helps map out measures that need to be taken to insure its continued use as a government facility. Built in 1895 and still used for its original purpose, the historic courthouse mixes Romanesque Revival and Colonial Revival styles and features a clock tower crowned with a dome and a unique multi-gabled roof.
More money could be available to help courthouses like these continue to be a center of activity for their communities by increasing funds allotted to the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org. 1000 tags must be
ordered by December 2007 before these tags will be manufactured. Current tag orders are 426.

It is designed to help museums assess their strengths and weaknesses, and plan for the future. The program provides technical assistance for four kinds of assessments: (1) collections management; (2) governance; (3) institutional; and (4) public dimension. Assessments are funded on a first-come, first-served basis. Museums may apply for MAP assessments in any sequence. Museums that received a MAP assessment grant on or before September 2000 may apply for a grant to fund participation in that assessment a second time. The application deadline is February 15. Application materials can be obtained by contacting the American Association of Museums or by visiting its Web site at www.aam-us.org.
National Leadership Grants enable libraries and museums to help people gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors, and resources that enhance their engagement in community, work, family, and society.
