Georgia's Historic Courthouses exhibit travels to Hiawassee
Georgia has one of America's greatest collections of county courthouses with 132 listed in the National Register of Historic Places. An exhibit featuring the architectural and historical significance of these community landmarks, "Georgia's Historic Courthouses: Celebrating a Living Legacy" is traveling to locations around the state to promote the importance of preserving these important buildings.
The exhibit, which was developed by the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, had its debut at the State Capitol

in January 2006. It will be on display from Tuesday, September 4 through Tuesday, October 30 in Hiawassee at the Towns County Courthouse. An informational session will be hosted at the Towns County Courthouse by the Georgia Historic Preservation Division in partnership with the North Georgia Regional Development Center on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 from 2 pm until 4 pm.
"We created this exhibit to call attention to Georgia's unique collection of county courthouses because many of these landmark buildings are endangered," said HPD Division Director Ray Luce. "Courthouses are so central to a community's quality of life and economic development that every effort should be made to ensure that they continue as an active part of their communities."
The "Georgia's Historic Courthouses: Celebrating a Living Legacy" project is supported by the Georgia Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities and designed by Avient Museum Services. It features photographs by HPD staff photographer James R. Lockhart and historic images and copies of records from the State Archives.
For additional information about the exhibit, contact Leigh Burns, HPD's community planning coordinator, at 404-651-5181 or Leigh_Burns@dnr.state.ga.us.

Tag Orders reach 861
Orders for the new preservation license tag reached 861 this week. Only 139 more are needed for the tag to be produced. Please continue to promote the tag and encourage people to order one (or more!). Last month HPD received Georgia Heritage Grant applications requesting close to $600,000 in assistance. We will only be able to award a little over $100,000. The need is great. Please remind people that sales from the tags will go directly into the state's grant program that supports the preservation of historic resources.
For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us.
