May is Historic Preservation Month!
On May 8, Governor Sonny Perdue will officially proclaim May as Historic Preservation Month in Georgia. This year's theme, Preservation Works for Georgia!, promotes historic preservation as "an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, and maintaining community character."
Preservation-related events will be taking place in communities across Georgia. Go to HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org and check the Events Calendar for historic preservation month activities near you. Submit your listings to: helen_talley-mcrae@dnr.state.ga.us. Check the National Trust's Web site at www.nationaltrust.org/preservationmonth for resources and ideas to help your community or organization plan activities.
HPD will hold its eleventh annual Preservation Achievement Awards presentation in conjunction with the National Register Review Board meeting on May 11 in Atlanta. Recognition is given to people and organizations throughout the state that have made significant contributions to protecting Georgia's historic and archaeological resources.

May is Georgia Archaeology Month!
The Society for Georgia Archaeology (SGA) will be holding their annual spring meeting event in Macon on May 19. This year's theme is Conflict: Georgia's Expanding Boundaries, 1733-1833. The program highlights Georgia's military past during a century of dramatic change. A keynote address will be given by Retired Colonel James M. Johnson, Ph.D. Self-guided tours will explore several early military sites in central Georgia beginning in Macon at Fort Hawkins - a major U.S. Army headquarters from 1806-1819. Archaeological excavations over the past two years have drastically rewritten the history of this fort. Follow along the remnants of the historic Federal Road and visit Fort Wilkinson on the Oconee River, Ocmulgee Old Fields, and Benjamin Hawkins' Creek Agency on the Flint
River. You also may travel to historic Clinton, an early town with an intact road system and early federal era houses. Informed tour guides will be posted at each of these station stops to answer your questions and provide historical and archaeological context to enhance your visit. For more information and to register, go to http://www.thesga.org/spring_meeting_2007.htm
Visit the SGA Web site at www.thesga.org to learn about other events and how you can get involved.
