May is Historic Preservation Month!
On May 8, Governor Sonny Perdue will officially proclaim May as Historic Preservation Month in Georgia. This year's theme, Preservation Works for Georgia!, promotes historic preservation as "an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, and maintaining community character." Read the proclamation and our press release at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaynavigation.asp?TopCategory=163
Preservation-related events will be taking place in communities across Georgia. Go to HPD's Web site and check the Events Calendar for historic preservation month activities near you at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displayevents.asp?lstMonth=5&lstYear=2007. Submit your listings to: helen_talley-mcrae@dnr.state.ga.us.
What better time than during your Historic Preservation Month event to promote the new historic preservation license tag! You can download information sheets, order forms and posters from our Web site at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=327
HPD will hold its eleventh annual Preservation Achievement Awards presentation in conjunction with the National Register Review Board meeting on May 11 in Atlanta. Recognition is given to people and organizations throughout the state that have made significant contributions to protecting Georgia's historic and archaeological resources.

Latest county breakdown of preservation tag orders
Historic preservation license plates have been ordered in 87 of Georgia's 159 counties as of April 1st. Since tag sale figures last were analyzed in February, nine additional counties are now represented by one or more tag orders. The top ten selling counties are: Fulton County in first place at 68; DeKalb comes in
second with 66; Cobb 52; Chatham 38; Clarke 22; Gwinnett 18; Cherokee 14; Glynn 14 Muscogee 14; and Bibb 11. Surprisingly, 33 of the 87 counties that have seen tag activity have sold only one license plate each. The county with the largest increase in orders from February to April was Cobb, which previously had 34, but now has 52. The majority of sales continue to be from the Metro Atlanta area and counties along the coast. We have a noticeable lack of participation from many counties within the Heart of Georgia, Southeast Georgia and Southwest Georgia Regional Development Center areas. Unfortunately, our sales rate has slowed down from an average of 13 per week to about 10 per week. We will have to speed back up to reach our goal of 1000 tag orders by December 31, 2007. The current number of orders is 613.
Funds from the tag fee will go to the pool of money allotted for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. These grants help stabilize, rehabilitate, and preserve important landmarks across the state by matching funds with grant recipients who propose worthwhile development and predevelopment projects. For more information, contact Grants Coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us or visit our Web site at www.gashpo.org.

2008 will mark the 75th anniversary of the New Deal
The National New Deal Preservation Association (NNDPA) is a non-profit organization created in 1999. Their mission is to identify, preserve, and document the legacy of the New Deal (1933-42). The intent of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary in 2008 is to heighten public awareness and appreciation of America's New Deal experience, and the enduring legacy of the New Deal in America today.
This is an opportunity for you to showcase your statewide or local New Deal treasures in your area. By doing so, you will also create economic, tourism and historic/heritage preservation activities ripe for establishing partnerships with many local/state agencies and organizations that can create a cooperative focus that benefits all.
Once you have made the decision or what, when, where and how you will commemorate the 75th anniversary in your town or state please let NNDPA know so they can add it to the 2008 NNDPA calendar on these Web sites: www.newdeal75.org and www.newdeallegacy.org. For more information about this project, please contact Kathy Flynn at newdeal@cybermesa.com or 505473-3985.
