HPD announces recipients of 4th annual Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Stewardship
The Historic Preservation Division presented the 4th annual Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Stewardship on March 28 during the Department of Natural Resources Board meeting in Atlanta. DNR Board Chairman Jim Walters and HPD Director Ray Luce presented the awards. The honorees were recognized for their outstanding leadership and achievement in the preservation of state-owned or administered historic properties. These individuals are all current or retired public servants and were nominated by their colleagues and peers for their significant contributions in furthering the preservation of Georgia's historic properties.
Each year, one Governor's Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation is awarded for outstanding leadership or achievement of regional or statewide impact in historic preservation stewardship of state-owned or administered properties. This year's recipient was Michael Miller, Project Manager, Board of Regents, University System of Georgia, for his dedication and significant commitment to the stewardship of the university system's historic properties.
The Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Stewardship are awarded for significant leadership or achievement in historic preservation stewardship as it relates to state-owned or administered properties or projects. This year's recipients were: Dorothy Olson, Director, Georgia Capitol Museum and Tours, for her significant role in the ongoing rehabilitation and restoration of the Georgia Capitol. Dr. Ronald Zaccari, President, Valdosta State University, for his leadership in planning for the future growth and development of the campus, specifically his commissioning of VSU's Campus Historic Preservation Plan & Related Studies. Dr. George Wingblade, Director of Physical Plant, South Georgia College, for his work, as Director of Physical Plant, South Georgia College from 1996 until his

retirement in 2006 to preserve campus facilities while creating and enhancing an environment that attracted and inspired students, faculty and staff. Dr. Rowe Bowen, Section Chief for Cultural Resources, Office of Environment and Location, Georgia Department of Transportation, for his significant contributions to the conservation of Georgia's archaeological heritage on lands managed by the DNR.

HPD staff news
HPD welcomes Leigh Burns as our new Community Planning Coordinator. She will be working closely with the regional historic preservation planning program as well as with individuals, organizations and local governments throughout the state on local preservation issues. Before joining HPD, Leigh worked with R.S. Webb & Associates, a cultural resources management firm in Holly Springs, Georgia. She also has non-profit experience, having worked for many years with the Michael C. Carlos Museum in Atlanta. Leigh is a graduate from the Georgia State University Heritage Preservation Masters Program. Recent National Register listings
The following properties were listed in the National Register on March 9, 2007:
The Mineral Bluff Depot, located in Mineral Bluff, Fannin County, was nominated at the local for its association with transportation in Mineral Bluff. The one-story, rectangular, brick building was constructed in 1887 as a passenger and freight depot. In federal fiscal year 1996, a Transportation Enhancement Activity (TEA) grant was given for the rehabilitation of the depot.
The Max and Emma Sue McRae House, located in McRae, Telfair County, was nominated at the local level of significance as an excellent example of a Neoclassical Revival-style house. Character-defining features of the McRae House are the monumental front portico, entablature with dentils, side porches supported by columns, and symmetrical faade. The house also retains its historic interior finishes including elaborate mantelpieces, grand staircase, door and window surrounds, plaster walls, decorative moldings, and original floor plan.

The Southern Spring Bed Company is located in downtown Atlanta near Oakland Cemetery. The company was in business prior to 1887 and was the first and longest operating of Atlanta's spring bed companies. It was nominated at the local level of significance as a good and intact example of an early 20thcentury manufacturing complex. The rehabilitation of the Southern Spring Bed Company was approved by both the State and Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentive Offices, with final approval by the National Park Service on January 28, 2005. This complex of buildings now houses residential units.

Wanted: Large Landmarks In Need of A Little Work
Hampton Hotels is looking for suggestions of "world's largest" roadside landmarks that its volunteers could tackle as a refurbishment project. In a campaign started in 2000, the company has taken on projects across the country, from the National Historic Landmark Big Duck in Flanders, New York, to Tybee Island Lighthouse in Georgia. This year, the theme is "world's largest" and they are looking for six projects that need under $20,000 in work that can be done by volunteer labor. Technical Brief on Archeological Peer Review
The National Park Service's Archaeology Program has updated Peer Review of Federal Archaeological Projects and Programs. Also known as Technical Brief #21, the paper describes objectives, organization, and methods used to conduct peer reviews in public archeology projects and programs. Experience gained in recent peer reviews has been used to update the guidance and suggested procedures for government agencies and other archeological resources management organizations that use the peer review process to improve the effectiveness of projects and programs. http://www.cr.nps.gov/archeology/pubs/techBr/tch21.htm
