Preservation will be highlighted at annual Humanities Luncheon
The Governor's Awards in the Humanities Luncheon and Annual Humanities Lecture will be held Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 11:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. respectively at the Old Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in downtown Atlanta.
The Annual Humanities Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Timothy Crimmins and Mrs. Anne H. Farrisee. While the book won't be released to the general public until late summer, limited copies will be available for signing and purchase at the Governor's Awards.
HPD congratulates this year's five preservationist honorees: Mr. Cullen Chambers of Tybee Island, Mrs. Betty Sanders Snyder of Milledgeville, Mr. Gregory Paxton of Atlanta, Mr. John Waters of Athens, and Mrs. Susie Wheeler of Cassville/Cartersville.

Scholarship awards
The Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation Board is announcing a call for applications for its 2007 scholarship award. Qualifying students need to be enrolled in a degree program with a declared major to teach history or work in the field of historic preservation. Interested applicants should mail letters of interest to the W-W Historical Foundation Board; P.O. Box 337; Washington, Georgia 30673. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2007.
National Trust Diversity Scholarship Program currently provides financial assistance to approximately 60 community leaders/students from diverse backgrounds to attend the National Preservation Conference. Through educational sessions, informal conversation, and special events, participants strengthen their commitment to preserving historic places and revitalizing communities, and discover a supportive network to help in their endeavors. This year, the Scholarship Program is expanding its definition of eligibility to include preservationists from diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic and religious backgrounds. In addition, it seeks individuals who are working on projects that have a diversity component, including those working on sites with a relationship to sports, the military, sexual orientation, industrial facilities and cultural landscapes. The Trust hopes this broader definition of eligibility will help regions that have been challenged in the past to find candidates for conference
scholarships. The deadline for completed applications is Friday, June 1, 2007. http://www.nationaltrust.org/scholarships/diversity_scholarship.html

Report concludes vinyl siding products unhealthy
After several years of serious investigation and pressure from health advocates, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Technical Advisory Committee has concluded that vinyl siding products are bad for human health. This was a challenging issue to the design and building community because vinyl is such a widely used building product and the issue is not the same as asbestos and lead paint. The research conclusion is based upon the total life-cycle of the product including its production and disposal more than its presence in buildings. The report of the USGBC technical committee can be found at http://www.healthybuilding.net/news/070309TSACfinal.html
