SFY 2007 Georgia Heritage Grants go to 10 communities
HPD received 29 applications this year for the Georgia Heritage SFY 2007 cycle. Funding requests totaled $598,000. After careful consideration, ten projects have been selected to receive funding, totaling $102,353. These award recipients are:
Chickamauga Masonic Lodge, Walker County--$20,000 for stabilization/repair to foundation, walls, windows.
Old City Cemetery, Washington County--$18,000 for repair/stabilization of walkways, markers, walls.
Catoosa County Courthouse, Catoosa County--$11,550 for cupola/window/gutter repairs.
Heard County Jail, Heard County--$10,000 for masonry/gutter/window repair.
Metter High School, Candler County--$8,750 for window/portico repair. Chatooga Academy, Walker County--$8,750 for new roof/exterior repairs. Whiskey Bonding Barn, Pike County--$7,702 for floor repair/replacement. Hamilton House, Whitfield County--$6,960 for a historic structure
assessment report. Old Bacon County Elementary School, Bacon County--$5,400 for historic
structure assessment report. Camilla-Zack Country Life Center, Hancock County--$5,241 for a condition
assessment report.

HPD Historian Ken Thomas is retiring after 33 years of outstanding public service!
HPD Historian Ken Thomas will be retiring on October 31. A retirement celebration is scheduled for Sunday, October 15 from 2:00 to 5:00 at the Old DeKalb County Courthouse in downtown Decatur. Please join us as we celebrate Ken's 33 years of outstanding public service. Refreshments will be provided, and displays will highlight Ken's interests and accomplishments. A short program will be presented at 3:00. The favor of a $15 contribution to help defray the costs of the reception is requested. Additional contributions will be donated in Ken's name to a new Local History Book Fund for the Historic Preservation Division's library. Don't miss the 2006 Centennial Farms Awards, October 6!
The 2006 Georgia Centennial Farm Award ceremony will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 6 at the opening day of the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia. The Centennial Farm Program honors significant farms that have been continuously operating for over 100 years and deserve recognition for their historical importance.
This year, fifteen awards will be presented by Dr. Ray Luce, director of the Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Gretchen Brock, chair of the Georgia Centennial Farm Program. It's not too late to register for the next Heritage Tourism seminar
The 6th "Heritage Tourism: Putting History to Work in Georgia" seminar will be held in Camilla on October 5 and 6. The seminars are sponsored by the Historic Preservation Division, the Georgia Trust and the Georgia Department of Economic Development's Tourism Division. The workshops will discuss the traits of the heritage traveler, the need for authenticity, how to develop your heritage tourism product, funding sources for product development, and collaborative approaches to heritage tourism. Brannyn Allen is the new historic preservation planner at the South Georgia Regional Development Center (www.sgrdc.com). Her region includes the following counties: Ben Hill, Brooks, Echols, Cook, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Tift and Turner. Brannyn has a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from Texas A&M University with a certificate in historic preservation, and her undergraduate degree in History is also from Texas A&M. More grant news
A second round of Preserve America grants for 2006 has been announced and includes LaGrange. "Exhibits and Kiosks at the Museum on Main" received $123,000 to "create exhibits for the Museum on Main with complimentary on-line exhibits and three kiosks located throughout LaGrange, telling the local history through the stories of the people who have lived in the area. Also, develop brochures and public banners to market the exhibits." http://www.preserveamerica.gov/
The National Wildlife Refuge Preserve America Grant Program provides competitive grants ($10,000 - $15,000) to help fund national wildlife refuge interpretive and education projects on history and historic sites and how they contribute to our conservation and understanding of natural resources. Nonprofit organizations interested in partnering with national wildlife refuges are eligible; grants must be matched. The deadline is Nov. 1, 2006, with funding decisions

Interpreting America's Historic Places Grants: The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) offers Consultation Grants and Planning Grants to support public humanities programs that use one or more historic sites to interpret important topics in American history. Projects can interpret a single historic site, a series of sites, whole neighborhoods, communities or towns or larger geographic areas. They can include exhibits, interpretive materials, heritage tourism partnerships, or other strategies for helping the public learn more about your historic place.
