Reminder: proposed constitutional amendment (#3) could impact preservation license tag
The November 7, 2006 election includes a proposed constitutional amendment (#3) that impacts all special license plates, including the recently created historic preservation plate. If the amendment passes, then all authorized revenues from sales of the historic preservation license plate will be dedicated directly to the Georgia Heritage grant program. If the amendment does not pass, revenues from sales of the plates will become part of the general fund and will be allocated by the Georgia legislature. For questions concerning this amendment, please contact Mary Ann Eaddy at 404-651-5283 or email her at mary_ann_eaddy@dnr.state.ga.us.
License plate orders still are increasing steadily, about 15-20 per week, with our current number at 305. Visit our Web site at www.gashpo.org to order yours.

HPD staff news
Cherie Bennett, Community Planning Coordinator at HPD's Planning and Local Assistance Unit, and formerly our Grants Coordinator, has left her position to join the staff at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. We very much appreciate the wonderful work she accomplished while she was employed at HPD and wish her the best of luck in her future career plans. We are sure she will continue to contribute to preservation in Georgia from her new position as a planner with DCA.

HABS/HAER/HALS opportunities

The National Park Service is looking for a few good men and women to help document America's historic sites and structures. For more than 70 years, the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) has been documenting the nation's built environment through measured architectural drawings, large format photography, and written histories. Its sister programs, the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) created in 1969 and the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) created in 2000, have expanded the National Park Service's documentation responsibilities beyond historic buildings to engineering structures and landscapes. The backbone of the documentation program has been college students; aspiring architects, landscape architects, historians, and engineers who spend 12 weeks in the field gaining valuable hands-on experience under the guidance of a trained project supervisor. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2007. http://www.cr.nps.gov/hdp/jobs/summer.htm
Sponsored by the Society of Architectural Historians and HABS, the Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship offers a $10,000 stipend to support research by an architectural historian on a 12-week HABS summer project. Applications must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2007. http://www.cr.nps.gov/hdp/jobs/tompkins.htm

Cultural Resources Diversity Internship program proposals sought
The National Park Service is accepting project proposals for its Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program for summer 2007. The program provides career exploration opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students from diverse communities in historic preservation and cultural resources management. The program will sponsor 15 to 20 interns during a 10-week summer session. The total cost for each intern is $10,500. The cost is shared between the NPS and the intern sponsor. Project proposals are due by December 14, 2006. Additional information about the program and application is available from Turkiya Lowe (202-354-2266 or turkiya_lowe@contractor.nps.gov) or http://www.cr.nps.gov/crdi/internships/intrnCRDIP.htm.
