Since 1995, Twenty-Two Historic Schools Benefit from Georgia Heritage Grant Program
Since its inception in 1995, the Georgia Heritage Grant Program has awarded money to help preserve twenty-two historic school buildings throughout the state. The money has been used to stabilize, rehabilitate, and help save these important educational landmarks that are so valued by their communities. One of the new SFY 2007 grants went to Chatooga Academy, in LaFayette, Walker County, which received $8,750.00 for a new roof and exterior repairs. The Academy had previously received a SFY 2006 predevelopment grant for a preservation plan. The brick building, built in 1835, served as a schoolhouse for nearly ninety years, and is believed to be one of the oldest brick school buildings in the state. For the SFY 2006 round of grants, the T.J. Elder School in Sandersville, Washington County received $20,000.00 for a new roof as well as foundation and floor repairs to convert the building into an educational and cultural center. The school was built in 1927-1928 and has been an important African American site for almost eighty years.
More money could be available to help save schools like these, as well as other community landmarks, by increasing funds available for Georgia Heritage Grants. You can help us achieve this goal by ordering a Historic Preservation license plate. Twenty-two dollars of the tag fee is designated for the Georgia Heritage Grant Program. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate and/or use the order form to reserve the plate, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org.

Draft-Georgia State Historic Preservation Plan 2007-2011: Building a Preservation Ethic
A draft of HPD's historic preservation plan is now available on our website www.gashpo.org
Under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, each State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is charged with developing, and revising as needed, a statewide historic preservation plan. For the past year, through public forums, questionnaires, meetings and research, the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) has been working on an update to Georgia's historic preservation plan (20012006). Once finalized, the updated plan will guide our work for the next five years (2007-2011), and can provide common direction for all organizations and individuals who support the preservation of Georgia's historic places.
We welcome your comments on this draft. Please note that, although not provided in this draft, the final version of the plan will include photographs and other graphics. Please send your comments to Karen_AndersonCordova@dnr.state.ga.us, by October 31, 2006. You may also send written comments to the Historic Preservation Division, Attention- Karen AndersonCordova, 34 Peachtree Street, Suite 1600, Atlanta, Georgia 30303.

National Register news
The following properties were listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 20, 2006:
Completed in 1939, the Catoosa County Courthouse is significant in architecture for being a fine example of a New Deal-era county courthouse built in the Colonial Revival style that retains most of its original features. Two memorials (one honoring war dead, the other an eternal flame) and two state historical markers are symmetrically placed on either side of the central walk. This funding supplemented local bond funding that was voted on in a local referendum in 1938. The building opened September 2, 1939, one day after World War II began in Europe, with a large public ceremony attended by 1,000 citizens.
The Effingham County Jail is a two-story, brick building in the Colonial Revival style, looking similar to the 1908 Effingham County Courthouse. The property is also significant in politics and government because as the county's only jail from its construction with PWA money in 1935 until 1993, it served a major role in law enforcement in the county, as part of the justice system, and as the visible home of the county sheriff, an elected official, who was the chief law enforcement officer of the county. The jail was deactivated once a new jail opened in 1993 and the building became a museum operated by the Historic Effingham Society.
