National Historic Preservation Act celebrates 40th anniversary!
Congress passed the National Historic Preservation Act on October 15, 1966. (You may read the Act online at http://www.achp.gov/nhpa.html). Its 40th anniversary this month is an opportunity to note that the act has fostered the identification and treatment of thousands of buildings, structures, sites, objects, and districts significant in the history of the United States. The act is the foundation for federal, state, tribal, and local government historic preservation programs. The NHPA established the Historic Preservation Fund, State Historic Preservation Offices, Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the National Register of Historic Places, and in subsequent amendments, the Certified Local Government and Tribal Historic Preservation programs.
The Preserve America Summit, October 18-20, 2006 in New Orleans, is an effort to take stock of the strides made over the last four decades in historic preservation because of the NHPA, and explore how to best continue protecting Americas rich national cultural and historic heritage resources into the next century. Four Georgia delegates participating in the summit are: Bob Young, Brian Robinson, Ray Luce and Jane Cassady. Learn more at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaypressrelease.asp?ArticleID=214
As part of its Save Our History initiative to support historic preservation and local history education in communities across the country, The History Channel is offering a new, four-part series of lesson plans commemorating the 40th anniversary of the NHPA for middle and high school teachers and educators at local history organizations. The first lesson plan in the series was created by the staff of Heritage Education Services at the National Park Service (NPS) and can be downloaded at http://www.saveourhistory.com/educators/monthly_lesson_plans.html. Future contributors will include the National Archives, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and the National Trust. All activities are linked to National Standards and can serve as the basis for entries for the Save Our History National Honors Teacher and Student of the Year Contests. For more information on the National Honors please visit www.saveourhistory.com.

Georgia Preservation Planners Get an Update on the Tag
Georgia's regional preservation planners gathered in Atlanta October 17-18 for their quarterly meeting. A topic of interest was the current status of the tag initiative. Many of the planners have already begun promotion of the tag within their RDC regions. Several of the planners enthusiastically volunteered to deliver tag materials to their county tag offices. Thank you, planners!
License plate orders still are increasing steadily, about 15-20 per week, with our current number at 272. For more information on how to order the historic preservation license plate or help spread the word, please contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or email her at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us. To view the plate, access the order form, and locate the nearest tag office, go to HPD's website at www.gashpo.org.

Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is now Law!
This law instructs the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to establish a Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission that will oversee the implementation and funding for the designated corridor that stretches from northern Florida, along Georgia's and South Carolina's coastlines, and into North Carolina. The law authorizes $1 million per year in funding for the corridor to help protect what the

National Trust of Historic Preservation named as one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Sites in America.
The Commission will be composed of 15 members appointed by the Interior Secretary. The State Historic Preservation Officer of South Carolina will nominate four commission members, and two individuals will be nominated by the State Historic Preservation Officers of Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. In addition, the Interior Secretary will appoint two individuals from South Carolina and one individual from Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida who are recognized experts in historic preservation, anthropology, and folklore.

Hay House receives $75,000 Getty Foundation grant
The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has been awarded a prestigious $75,000 architectural conservation-planning grant from The Getty Foundation for a study to help determine the best internal climate control system for the Trustowned Johnston-Felton-Hay House in Macon.
"They award less than two dozen architectural conservation grants annually throughout the world," said Trust President & CEO Greg Paxton.
"This grant will aid our future conservation efforts at Hay House. We anticipate that it will result in an innovative approach to heating and cooling to conserve and prolong the life of historical collections within the house and for protecting the structure itself, including its decorative woodwork, plaster and stained glass as well as its gold leaf and painted marbleized and wood-grained finishes," said T. Patrick Brennan, the Trust's senior director of properties.
Hay House is a National Historic Landmark. It was designated an official project of Save America's Treasures by the White House Millennium Council in 2000. http://www.georgiatrust.org/historic_sites/hay_house.htm
