State preservation office commended for innovation
HPD has received an award from the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Offices (NCSHPO) for establishing the nation's first African American program in a state historic preservation office. Dr. Ray Luce, HPD's director and deputy state historic preservation officer, accepted the award at its recent annual meeting in Washington DC.
In its second year, the NCSHPO Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation recognize SHPOffices and staff for outstanding programs and service. Dr. Luce said, "Being recognized by our peers is particularly gratifying. In the past, most preservationists only recognized the 'mansion on the hill.' Now we are allinclusive. Having this program ensures that we are looking at everyone's cultural resources."
Dr. Luce thanked the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network (GAAHPN) for their leadership and Jeanne Cyriaque, HPD's African American programs coordinator, for her implementation of the program.
