HPD staff hit the road to visit tag offices
July 1 marked the beginning of HPD's big push to "sell" the historic preservation license plate. HPD staff are hitting the road over the next two months, crisscrossing the state, to visit as many as possible of the 190 county tag offices in Georgia, bringing sample plates and posters to display on their walls and in their windows.
Seventy-seven historic preservation license plates have been reserved thus far, but we must have 1,000 ordered by December 31, 2007! Please encourage your coworkers, friends, neighbors, and family to help save Georgia's special places by reserving a license plate now! Go to HPD's Web site at www.gashpo.org to order your plate now and to see what it looks like. For more information, contact grants coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434; email at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us.

African American preservation conferences
Seventy-four participants joined the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network (GAAHPN) in Celebrating Our Coastal Heritage. The Brunswick Landmarks Foundation sponsored the opening reception at Old City Hall. Four workshops were held in the educational building at First African Baptist Church in the Old Town Brunswick Historic District. Conference presenters included representatives from Georgia's three graduate programs in historic preservation, One World Archives, Risley Alumni Association, the Southeast Georgia CDC, and the St. Simons African American Heritage Coalition. These speakers provided their expertise as volunteers to ensure a
quality program at minimal cost to the participants. The Glynn County Board of Education provided a bus for the closing field session that included a tour of the Risley School campus, Cassina Garden Club tabby houses and the Harrington School on St. Simons Island. These contributions reflect the partnerships that have aided GAAHPN since its inception, and they acknowledge this valuable support of African American historic preservation in Georgia.
It's not too late to register for the African American Preservation Alliance (AAPA) conference in Memphis, August 3-5. Jeanne Cyriaque, HPD's African American programs coordinator, will moderate one of the ten workshops. The conference also includes an opening reception, luncheon, gospel program and optional tours. Keynote speakers are: Michael Allen, speaking on the Gullah/Geechee National Heritage Area; Donovan Rypkema, speaking on the Economics of Preservation; and Rodney Reynolds, founder and publisher of American Legacy magazine. The complete conference program (including registration form, hotels and tour information) is posted on HPD's Web site at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=328.

National Register news
Cabbagetown, which consists of a mill complex and its associated housing, is located east of downtown Atlanta, Fulton County, in north central Georgia. It is characterized by industrial, residential, commercial, and community landmark buildings constructed from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
The Cabbagetown Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 1, 1976. The period of significance for the original listing was 1881 to 1925. Additional documentation has updated the period of significance of the historic district to 1956 to include buildings constructed between 1926 and 1956. Resources within the original district boundary were re-evaluated according to National Register criteria and reclassified when necessary. No additional acreage is being added to the historic district. This additional information includes descriptions of the mill buildings to be included as contributing resources in the updated period of significance.

GCA's traditional arts survey
The Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) is compiling a comprehensive database of traditional artists who reside in Georgia as well as arts organizations and other community institutions with an interest in presenting traditional arts. Dr. Norman Harris and Dr. Clarissa Myrick-Harris of One World Archives (OWA), are GCA representatives specifically gathering information about traditional craftspeople, musicians, dancers, other tradition bearers within the west central and southwest Georgia regions.
