Your community could host the next HPC training
The Georgia Alliance of Preservation Commissions (GAPC) is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to local historic preservation commissions and design review issues for local governments. The GAPC sponsors training twice per year in the spring and fall, and a different Georgia community hosts each training. This Spring, we are looking to hold the training in the southern portion of the state (approximately south of Macon). We need to identify a vital and energetic host! The statewide historic preservation commission training brings attention to local preservation efforts, generates sales for local businesses and provides a way to get YOUR local elected officials, city staff and preservation commissioners to training quickly and easily! If you want to have the spotlight shine on your town, sponsor the next two-day statewide HPC training. Call Jennifer Lewis for a "Host City Checklist" at 706-583-8047 or email her at jmlewis@uga.edu.

National Register News
Veal School, Carroll County was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 22, 2005. Constructed in 1900, Veal School was significantly enlarged and altered in 1929. It served white children in the rural community of Veal. Due to public school legislation passed in the early 20th century and nationwide studies on education, school districts in Georgia began a period of consolidation to improve educational standards. Veal School is significant in the area of architecture as a good and intact example of a school building that evolved over time from a one-room rural public school to a consolidated public
school with four classrooms and an auditorium. For more information about the National Register, visit our Web page at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaynavigation.asp?TopCategory=41

Heritage health index report published
Heritage Preservation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services have published their survey of the condition and preservation needs of archival, museum, and historical society collections. The report addresses more than 4.8 billion artifacts, books, natural specimens, photographs, historic and archaeological artifacts, paintings and sculptures--in more than 30,000 institutions. It notes the nations cultural treasures are not only in institutions, but are on the streets of cities, in parks, and in homes. The survey concluded that all
types of collections in large and small institutions are in danger because of improper environments, lack of emergency planning, and inadequate staff and funding. For a copy of the summary report contact Heritage Preservation, 202-233-0800; the complete report is available http://www.heritagepreservation.org/.
