Preserve America Grant applications for Georgia's historic cemeteries are now available
Applications for a one-time grant program to help preserve Georgia's historic cemeteries have been mailed and also are available on HPD's website at www.gashpo.org.
The purpose of the subgrant program is to assist local communities in promoting their historic cemeteries through heritage tourism. This subgrant program is part of a larger Preserve America received by HPD in March 2006. Entitled "Campaign to Preserve Georgia's Historic Cemeteries," the program consists of two additional components, which include a cemetery publication and a statewide cemetery conference in the fall of 2007. $60,000 in matching (50%/50%) funds is available, and the application deadline is October 13, 2006.

Eligible projects will fall under the following categories: research and documentation; interpretation and education; planning; marketing; or training. The program does not include "brick and mortar" projects. Only communities that have been designated Preserve America communities or communities that are Certified Local Governments and have applied to become Preserve America communities are eligible to apply for the grant program.
To find out more about becoming a Preserve America community, please go to www.preserveamerica.gov.
For more information or to receive a subgrant application in the mail, please contact HPD Grants Coordinator Carole Moore at 404-463-8434 or e-mail at carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us.

GAPC accepting bids for hosting Spring 2007 HPC Training

In reviewing Fall '06 bids, the GAPC was impressed by the City of Elberton's application and has asked Elberton to host the Fall 2007 HPC training. In the spirit of planning ahead, they are currently accepting bids from communities who would like to host the Spring 2006 HPC training! This Spring, they are looking to hold the training in the southern portion of the state (approximately south of Macon) and need to identify a vital and energetic host! The statewide historic preservation commission training brings attention to local preservation efforts, generates sales for local businesses and provides a way to get YOUR local elected officials, city staff and preservation commissioners to training quickly and easily! If you want to have the spotlight shine on your town, sponsor the next two-day statewide HPC training. Call Jennifer Lewis for a "Host City Checklist" at 706-583-8047 or email her at jmlewis@uga.edu.

NEH seeks historic preservation grant applications
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is calling for applications for consultant, planning and implementation grants as part of its Interpreting America's Historic Places program. Proposals can be for exhibits, interpretive materials, heritage tourism partnerships, and projects that help the public learn about a historic place and the people, stories, events, and ideas that make it a significant part of American history. Projects can interpret a single historic site, a series of sites, whole neighborhoods, communities, or larger geographic regions. The deadline for consultation and planning grants is September 12, 2006; the deadline for implementation grants is January 23, 2007. For additional information call 202-606-8269, email publicpgms@neh.gov, or find the guidelines at www.neh.fed.us/grants/guidelines/historicplaces.html

Re-advertisement for removal of 10th Street Atlanta craftsman-bungalows
The Georgia Institute of Technology, on behalf of the Georgia State Board of Regents (the Owner), is accepting proposals for the purchase and relocation of two houses, located at 318 and 328 Tenth Street, Atlanta. Proposals must be submitted on forms provided by the Owner that identify the requirements for purchase and removal of the houses from the Owner's property. Relocation and reconstruction of the houses to an appropriate site within the Home Park neighborhood, while preferable, is not a requirement for purchase.
(insert photos here)
Based on a historical survey of the two houses prepared in April of 2005, by Ray & Associates, the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of

Natural Resources has determined that both houses are historically significant. Research indicates that these two homes were possibly designed by Leila Ross Wilburn--Georgia's first woman architect. Also--the houses are fine examples of the craftsman-bungalow style. The houses are architecturally intact with most original features still remaining.
Please contact Mike Patterson at (404) 385-0093, or E-mail mike.patterson@facilities.gatech.edu, to request a submittal form.
