HPD invites artwork submissions for a new preservation license plate
During the 2005 Legislative Session, the General Assembly authorized the creation of a special license plate to promote historic preservation efforts in Georgia. It is the intent that proceeds from the sale of these license plates will promote preservation projects through HPD's Georgia Heritage Grant program.
HPD is now issuing an "Invitation to Submit Artwork" for the design of these plates. Please go to HPD's Web site at http://hpd.dnr.state.ga.us/content/displaycontent.asp?txtDocument=293 to see the formal announcement. The deadline for artwork to be received at HPD is December 1, 2005. Paper copies of the "Invitation" can be requested from Carole Moore at (404) 463-8434 or carole_moore@dnr.state.ga.us.

HPD's traveling exhibit on Georgia's historic courthouses to debut in January
Georgia has one of America's greatest collections of county courthouses; 132 are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings represent nearly 170 years of Georgia history. Their architectural and historic significance have made them community landmarks in nearly every county across the state.
The Georgia Humanities Council recently awarded the Historic Preservation Division (HPD) a $9,000 grant to produce a traveling exhibit on Georgia's historic courthouses. Photographs by James R. Lockhart, HPD's long-time staff photographer, will be featured in the exhibit. Historic images and copies of records from the State Archives will be on display. Kathy Dixson, principal of Avient Museum Services, is the project's design consultant.
The exhibit will open at the State Capitol, January 11-12 at the beginning of the 2006 Georgia Legislative Session. From March through June 2006, it will travel to various locations around the state, including Dahlonega, LaGrange, Valdosta, and Brunswick. 4,445 Sanborn Maps are now available online!
The Digital Library of Georgia is pleased to announce the availability of a new online resource: Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for Georgia Towns and Cities, 1884-1922. The digital collection consists of 4,445 maps by the Sanborn Map Company depicting commercial, industrial, and residential areas for 133 municipalities.
Originally designed for fire insurance assessment, the color-coded maps relate the location and use of buildings, as well as the materials employed in their construction. The maps indicate which city utilities--such as water and fire service--were available. Fire insurance maps document the changing face of towns and cities, providing highly detailed information for each neighborhood and block. The Library of Congress web site refers to them as "probably the single most important record of urban growth and development in the United States during the past one hundred years."
The Sanborn Maps database is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia as part of Georgia HomePLACE. The project is supported with federal LSTA funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The maps represented are from the University of Georgia Libraries Map Collection. Visit the site at: http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/sanborn/
