Georgia DNR appoints first Deputy State Archaeologist
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Historic Preservation Division has appointed Underwater Archaeologist Jason Burns as DNR's first Deputy State Archaeologist.
State Archaeologist Dr. David Crass said, "Naming Jason the Deputy State Archaeologist indicates DNR's emphasis on the protection and enhancement of Georgia's underwater resources. Shipwrecks, historic riverfronts, and other archaeological sites associated with our shared maritime heritage tell us about our own history, plus they have the potential to be developed into valuable heritage tourism assets for the state."
Burns is interested in speaking with anyone who knows of any sites in Georgia's waterways. You may contact him directly at Jason_Burns@dnr.state.ga.us or 912-598-3346. Information on Georgia's new underwater archaeology program and coastal archaeology office can be found online at www.gashpo.org.

Reminder: HPD wants your input through public forums and online survey
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) of the Department of Natural Resources, Georgia's State Historic Preservation Office, has begun the process of updating the state historic preservation plan. The plan establishes the priorities and policies to guide the Division's preservation efforts for the next five years (2006-11).
As part of the planning process, we'd like your input in our online survey. Go to our Web site, www.gashpo.org and click on the link: Attention-give us your input for a new state plan! A print version of the survey will be mailed out in September. Be one of the first to fill it out!
In addition, HPD will be holding two public forums to solicit input to help set goals and priorities and to develop a plan that will be effective and useful to the Division, the preservation community and stakeholders who use the Division's services. The forums will provide information about HPD's programs and services and about the historic preservation planning process and will allow for public input on various preservation issues.
